Uncles And Aunts: Your Presence Is Required

Everything that made my uncle so dear to me can be distilled into a single essence: he was <em>present</em>. He and my aunt made a visible effort to be deliberately present when most people are accidentally absent. They took time out of busy schedules to come and see both of my children when they were just a few weeks old, bringing food, gifts, a listening ear and good conversation.

Five Ways To Break Free From Your Phone

We didn't choose to home educate the children just so that they could see me checking my phone for most of the day. Part of being a conscious parent involves frequent reflection on how things are going, and making changes when needed. For me, watching that video footage drew a line that I want to avoid crossing in future.

Creativity Is The Difference Between Surviving And Thriving

I'm frustrated and saddened by the number of adults who have described themselves to me as "not creative", when I know as children they would have said the exact opposite. What is happening in our schools and society to subdue that inner creative spark and educate our children out of creativity?

We're Going Car-Free, And It's Gonna Be OK

To her credit, the lady did call me back the next day to check the children and I were ok, and to apologise for shouting at me in front of them. But in my mind this incident and the flat tyre the week before were both signs that we had made the right decision a few days earlier to sell our car and become more acquainted with public transport.

Autumn + No School = Awesome

As my own and countless other home educating families across the northern hemisphere celebrate not going back to school next week, it occurred to me how strange it is for schools to start the new academic year at a time when the whole of nature is winding down.

Identity Crisis, Anyone?

I wonder how it is possible to feel opposing emotions at the same time, yet here I am: fearless while also afraid, triumphant while also overwhelmed, grounded while also totally uprooted. After two years of indecision I have finally hung up my stethoscope for the foreseeable future, and am creating a new life as a home educating parent.
