Sam Murphy

Health and fitness journalist, author and coach

I have been writing and presenting on fitness for more than a decade, becoming one of the UK's leading experts. With a background in magazine journalism and a first class honours degree in sport & exercise science, I am able to translate the science behind getting fit and optimising physical performance into accessible, entertaining features and effective workouts.

Alongside my writing career, I have appeared on BBC Breakfast, BBC Radio 4 and Radio London - talking about topical fitness issues - and presented at the Science Museum, The Running Show and the London Marathon. I've also been involved with many sport and health-related projects including the BBCs Raise your Game, Time Out's Run London Guide, The Guardian's Get Fit with Team GB and Official British Army Fitness Guides and the National Lottery’s Health &Wellbeing campaign.
It's not all talk, though! I have a passion for running, and, to date, have completed 15 marathons, the Himalayan 100 Mile Race and numerous other events, including a dozen triathlons. I am a qualified personal trainer and level 2 UKA running coach as well as a certified barefoot running coach, and have helped many people achieve their fitness goals. My writing appears regularly in The Guardian, The Financial Times, Observer Sport Monthly and Health & Fitness. I also have a monthly column in Runner's World called 'Murphy's Lore', and write for women's magazines Easy Living, Top Sante and Healthy and specialist sports titles. You can see a selection of my articles here. I have written seven books to date, including the bestselling Run for Life: The Real Woman's Guide to Running which sold more than 200,000 copies and been translated into 10 languages, and the definitive marathon training book for newbies, Marathon & Half Marathon: From Start to Finish. My new book Real Women Run, comes out on March 29th 2012.
