Just as the saying goes: 'it takes a village to raise a child,' it takes a community to support mothers to breastfeed. During World Breastfeeding Week 2017 we look at how we can build a village of support around our mothers, helping them to breastfeed for as long as they wish.

Removing the Barriers to Breastfeeding in the UK

Breastfeeding. Although I have spent my entire working life trying to improve care for women who want to breastfeed, I still hesitate to write openly about it. This is because breastfeeding is such a fraught subject in the UK, often viewed as difficult to achieve, and sometimes seen as unnecessary because of a mistaken perception that formula milk is a close second best.

Changing the Conversation Around Breastfeeding

We need to change the conversation. We can stop laying the blame for a major public health issue in the laps of individual women, and acknowledge the collective responsibility of us all to remove the barriers to breastfeeding which lead to eight out of ten women reporting they had to stop breastfeeding before they had wanted to.
