Tom Hird

Heavy Metal Marine Biologist

Tom Hird is a Yorkshireman through and through. Born and raised in Halifax, West Yorkshire, and fed a healthy diet of rugby, cricket, roast spuds and gravy, Tom knows passion when he sees/smells/eats it. And, of course, Movember is all about passion. The son of a veterinary surgeon, Tom developed a love and understanding of animals from a very early age. This love, combined with seaside holidays and the near constant Yorkshire rain, brewed a urge to investigate and explore the undersea world. Tom started scuba diving as soon as he legally could and now has 15 years experience, along with dual qualifications in both BSAC and PADI teaching organisations. However, it was only ever going to be a matter of time before the sea would remodel Tom Hird!

In 2006 at University of Wales, Bangor, during his Marine Biology degree, Tom was reborn as The Blowfish!! This was a nickname he picked up from the surf club that allowed him to combine all his loves in life and attempt to make a difference in the world we live in. Since then, The Blowfish has made it his destiny to educated, entertain and conserve the marine environment by speaking with love and passion about all the coolest critters you could ever possibly want to meet. Currently The Blowfish has appeared on CBBC's Blue Peter numerous times, co-presented The Cool Stuff Collective for CITV and provides his knowledge and ridiculous enthusiasm to the Marks and Spencer "School of Fish" campaign. When mild-mannered Tom Hird reins control back from Blowfish, he loves nothing more than cricket, real ale and constant tinkering with his many, many fish tanks!

Both Tom and The Blowfish set big goals to achieve and when in 2010 Tom lost a dear friend to prostate cancer, Movember gained a life long warrior. Tom doesn't take no for an answer, so prostate and testicular cancer had better watch out, because if you want a cause championed!? if you want passion and fire and yorkshire pudding?! if you want someone who is deliciously hairy!!? You might want to call Tom "The Blowfish" Hird

We're Half Way Through Movember...

Originally, I joined up with Movember because it was a laugh to grow a nice Mo and do some good at the same time! But on the 18th of May 2011, my Movember cause became personal. Keith "The Bishop" Jenkins died from prostate cancer just 12 days before his 72nd birthday.
