Wendy Kirkman
I am a graduate in Classics from St Anne's College, Oxford University and have also worked as a computer programmer and primary school teacher.
At present I run Giakonda IT, a family business, with my husband Howard, providing IT services for both education and business sectors.
My aim has always been for GiaKonda IT to behave in a socially responsible way, providing training courses to charities for their staff and clients pro bono or at reduced prices.
Since 2014 we have been working in Siavonga, Zambia, as volunteers. We have taken on various projects such as installing solar panels in schools that had no power, and providing a small hub of computers together with e-Library and e-Learning resources. In addition we arrange training sessions for the teachers to help them deliver the Zambian ICT curriculum.
A strong sense of community engagement is at the heart of our business strategy. Our work with local charities and the Zambia project has obvious benefits for local and international communities.
