Ben Fisher is in his second year as the Community Officer at Leeds University Union one of the largest students’ unions in the UK, where he works with five other students elected to lead the organisation. A former student at the University of Leeds – he graduated in English and Philosophy in 2011 – Ben first became a community volunteer during his undergraduate studies.

He is passionate about community volunteering and one of his main aims is to encourage more students to be active in their local Leeds communities. He represents the views of 32,000 students on a variety of issues, from housing to transport and local democracy.

"Ninety five % of problems here are caused by students" a speaker at a local neighbourhood meeting proclaims, and I wince. "What about me?" I think. "Or my friends who spend hours on community volunteering projects? Surely we're not part of the problem?"
