The Five Types of People to Surround Yourself With for Success

Success is made up of hard work, commitment and passion but perhaps one of the most crucial factors to take into account is who we choose to surround ourselves with. As the old adage goes, 'you are who you hang out with' and the people we invite into our world on a daily basis can impact the way we think, feel and act.

Success is made up of hard work, commitment and passion but perhaps one of the most crucial factors to take into account is who we choose to surround ourselves with. As the old adage goes, 'you are who you hang out with' and the people we invite into our world on a daily basis can impact the way we think, feel and act.

Each day presents you with the opportunity to spend time with those who inspire you to become a better person or to spend time around those who hold you back; the power is always in your hands.

Having had the opportunity to have worked with some truly amazing people as both a millionaires mentor and CEO of The Coaching Academy, I have noticed that most successful people I know tend to surround themselves with 5 distinct groups of people:

1) Positive People

Positive people view situations with a can do attitude and are able to see the best in a situation, they don't dwell on the negative, they learn the lesson and keep moving ahead. When you spend time around positive people, not only can they help you to maintain a high morale, their glass half full outlook on life can rub off on you too. Negative people on the other hand tend to remain stuck on the 'worst case scenario' or usually don't like to take responsibility for what's going on in their world which can drain your energy, drive and keep you stuck in similar self-defeating thoughts.

Think about the people you spend most of your time around and ask yourself:

Do they make me feel like i have what it takes to reach my goals?

Do they inspire me?

Do they make me feel good about myself?

Do i feel energised after spending time with them?

If the answer to your questions are mostly no's, then consider what value these people are adding to your life.

2) Go Getters

A go-getter is someone who has dreams and goals and goes after them! They give things their all and are set on making things happen! A go getter doesn't get bogged down with 'I can't do that' statements; instead they focus on how they can make things happen. Go-getters train themselves to remain disciplined and laser focused on achieving their goals and as a result they show up and get their hands dirty, even on the days they may not necessarily feel like it or the days that pessimism creeps in. Some of the most powerful go-getters I know have achieved what they have because they are passionate enough to believe that quitting is not an option and so they choose to surround themselves with those who are just as ambitious and committed to their goals as they are.

Who do you know that is a real go-getter? What qualities do they have that inspire you?

3) Those who have overcome adversity

Some of the most courageous and determined people I know are those who have overcome adversity. Many of them have allowed their traumas; failures and challenges to make them stronger and learnt valuable lessons along the way. Overcoming adversity has strengthened their resilience muscles, increased their self-awareness and built their confidence. Instead of allowing adversity to hold them back, many of them have used their challenges as fuel to turn things around, inspiring others to do the same.

Who do you know that has overcome all odds and inspires you to do the same?

4) Visionaries

Dreamers, creatives and visionaries view things in a way that makes the impossible, possible. Their out of the box thinking can help you to challenge your perceptions, stretch your boundaries and consider innovative solutions. If it wasn't for the dreamers of the world, we wouldn't be able to fly by plane, hold a smartphone in our hands or communicate with people via Facetime or Skype. Dreamers, creatives and visionaries are connected to a world of possibility and spending time around them can help you to push your limits, unleash your creative skills and consider looking at things with a fresh pair of eyes.

Who is your favourite visionary, and why?

5) People with a sense of humour

Spending time around those with a good sense of humour can lighten up a situation and snap you out of being serious. Very often those with a good humour are great at maintaining perspective and looking at the bigger picture which can help you to laugh at yourself and see the funny side of a situation. Not only can humour make you feel better, it is also a potent conflict and stress buster which boosts your creativity, productivity and morale. As the saying goes "Don't always take life too seriously, you won't come out of it alive'

Alongside surrounding yourself with the types of people above, it is also worth noting the importance of mixing with people from a variety of backgrounds and industries, although I spend a lot of time around business people, I also know people in the entertainment industry who are actors and singers, and seeing how they deal with their specific challenges often helps me to learn new things. When you choose to spend time around those who add value to your life not only does it inspire and motivate you to be and do more, it can also helps you to accelerate your success.
