Wandering through the bustling streets of China Town you may decide to take a short cut, nipping down side streets is the norm in Melbourne. Slipping down Croft Alley and after taking a right and then a left, and another right you’ll arrive at the doors of The Croft Institute (searching for it is part of its appeal). Once there you’ll discover the madness that lies behind the doors. This three storey bar is split into three different themes, the first floor plays homage to a science lab theme, with distorted glass and an array of potions to serve, the cocktails are lovely but deadly. The second floor is the ‘department of hygiene’ (aka the loos) and yes that is a hospital bed next to the sinks. The third and final floor of this maze is the 70s inspired dance floor. With old school gymnasium apparatus attached to the walls and a grass top bar, it’s very surreal. But after another house cocktail migrate to the dance floor where resident DJs play till 3am.
