Rum Wild In Cuba

Posted: 30/01/2012 18:03

Cuba is the motherland for rum lovers. This Saturday, 4 February, marks a very important date in the rum diaries of rum lovers the world over; the grand old 150th anniversary of Barcardi Rum. On this beautiful day in 1862, Don Facundo Bacardi Masso created what was to become the world's largest privately owned liquor company, which would go on to produce the rum to rule all rums.

Glorious Cuba, with its inimitable romanticism and infectious charm is where all the Bacardi magic began, and although Bacardi rum itself is no longer on sale here, rum runs through the veins of Cuban culture and palpitates at the heart of this wonderful country. Here at Black Tomato we've selected our five must-do's to make the most of your Cuban adventure to this salsa soaked island.

No doubt the most popular bar in Habana Vieja, La Bodeguita del Medio is the place to go for a trusty Havana Club Rum Mojito. Many famous faces, such as Brigitte Bardot and Errol Flynn have dropped in to Bodeguita for a mojito, but the bar is most famous for being a favourite of author and journalist, Ernest Hemingway. An old framed sign with large script handwriting sits proudly above the bar, it reads, “My mojito in La Bodeguita. My daiquiri in El Floridita. Ernest Hemingway”.
