If Anyone Is Playing Divide and Rule, It's Miss Abbott

Posted: 05/01/12 00:49 GMT

Yesterday evening a twitter storm broke out over a tweet by Labour Shadow Health Minister Dianne Abbot, who tweeted:

2012-01-04-ohdear.JPG

The tweet was sent in a conversation between Abbott and freelance journalist Bim Adewunmi:

2012-01-05-Abbottconvo.JPG

For those missing the blindingly obvious, Abbott made what some are deeming to be a racist comment, panning all white people as lovers of "divide and rule". Put simply, generalisations of any sort, let alone those concerning sexuality, gender or in this case race are abhorrent.

Abbott has since said her tweet was taken out context, maintaining that it "Refers to nature of 19th century European colonialism." Going on to say: "Bit much to get into 140 characters", and finally apologising "for any offence caused" by her tweet, but not apologising for the tweet itself.

It is clear, however, that the tweet has not been taken out of context, nor has a joke - however foul - been misconstrued. The hash tag #tacticasoldascolonialism indicates that she still thinks that white people are using 'divide and rule' tactics. Even without the hash tag, where Abbott talks about Adewunmi playing into a 'divide and rule' agenda, there are signs of prejudice. In what sense is this conversation, or the rogue tweet, one which is discussing European colonialism?

What is more baffling than Abbott's faux-defence is why Abbott thought such a comment is acceptable, and how she came to write it. She's an intelligent and talented MP who I would never have thought of as ignorant or racist, yet both are terms that I would plaster anyone else with given the circumstances. Given her background in multiculturalism and equality, Abbott ought to know better. While I don't see her as a racist, I see her comments as a huge oversight and something which warranted an immediate apology, not a delayed non-apology apology.

What will be interesting is what her colleagues will make of her outrageous comment. Perhaps they will respond as one tweeter did: "I can't comment on Diane Abbott's tweets, I'm too busy playing divide and rule." If anyone is playing 'divide and rule', it's Miss Abbott.

She did not say white people are "USING" divide and rule tactics. I think you have taken it out of context. Without a doubt this was a conversation Diana was having with another journalist, Bim, who in my opinion expressed her own disgruntled opinion about the term 'black community' or 'black community leaders' (Diana Abbott is a black leader in politics). Diana was merely implying in the best way she could within 140 characters that as a black person we should not 'adopt' the divide and rule; British history past (White ancestors) depicted many years ago when British Empire was part of and participating in colonialism. Of course this is not the case today. It is history as I understand it as there was no other history I received in school other than this one. All other history from other cultures would stick to saying that 'divide and rule' was a method practised by the British to suppress and separate communities so they in fact turn against themselves i.e. oppression. One other country this was practised is South Africa (given a new name called Apartheid). It existed and still exists although not by the British. Go read up British history.

Lastly, why is okay for the term 'black leaders' or 'black community leaders' to be used. Should a colour label be necessary?

There are offences expressed everyday. It is common for people to want to provide a label or name, but not ask the individual what is preferred.

Revisit history - South Africa (and its' apartheid policy) were a Dutch/Boer construct. The labels you object to seem to have been used by two people who also have a problem with them; there does not seem to be a corresponding problem with having an exclusive Black Police Association etc. For the record I am opposed to all forms of discrimination - including positive discrimination.

I respect your response Mick the Greek. One love.

While she did not explicitly say whit people are using divide and rule tactics it is implied in the conversation. She says "you are playing into a divide and rule agenda", it is implied again here: "we should not play their game." Also, #tacticasoldascolonialism implies, again, that she thinks that white people have a divide and rule agenda, or are using divide and rule tactics. She's not talking about the past, but the present. If she mean't the past perhaps she should reconsider her use of language.

I'm sure there are white people who do have such an agenda and use tactics appropriate to forwarding that agenda, the same can be said for the past. However, it is insulting to generalise that all white people have a divide and rule agenda against the black community. I don't think she is a racist, or that her comment was racist (since I don't think statements can be objectively racist), I merely think that if she qualified her tweet so that it read: "some white people" she never would have had this problem.

All in all, thanks for reading and commenting :).

Brett.
