Reeva's Love for Oscar Is Read Out at His Murder Trial

"Roses are red, violets are blue, I think today is a good day to tell you that I love you."

Oscar Pistorius' voice trembled as he read out Reeva Steenkamp's Valentine's message to him at his murder trial today, following a gruelling five days of cross-examination by state prosecutor, Gerrie Nel.

Accompanying the card was a photo frame displaying pictures of Oscar and Reeva together.

The message inside the card was written by the 29-year-old, possibly hours before the athlete shot and killed her on 14 February 2013, allegedly believing her to be an intruder.

The card forms part of the defence's case that the pair were in a "loving relationship" and the shooting did not occur because of an argument between the two, as suggested by the prosecution.

In his earlier testimony the double-amputee broke down saying he'd refrained from opening the card and gift until Reeva's birthday, quoting 8 August. This admission was heavily criticised by the South African media when it came to light her birthday was actually August 19.

After seven days in the witness box Pistorius stepped down, looking relieved as his younger sister Aimee hugged him.

It's unclear whether the defence's case will continue tomorrow after Gerrie Nel requested a fortnight adjournment to focus on other cases that had been neglected on account of Pistorius' murder trial exceeding the initial 3-week timescale. The defence counsel didn't challenge the request.

Judge Masipa said she would consider an adjournment until the 5 May and will give her decision before the start tomorrow's proceedings at Pretoria High Court.
