The Great Motivation Myth

Motivation is and always has been, placed on a pedestal. Those who are successful have it in bundles and those who don't, well they don't. Right? Wrong. Motivation is endemically overrated and your biggest enemy in the search for developing new habits.

Motivation is and always has been, placed on a pedestal. Those who are successful have it in bundles and those who don't, well they don't. Right?

Wrong. Motivation is endemically overrated and your biggest enemy in the search for developing new habits.

Why do you have to be a heartbreaker

Why do we love and cherish motivation so much? Because when its good its great. You get things done without friction and you feel on top of the world, nothing and nobody can get in your way. The world is your oyster when you have motivation on your side.

There is however, a massive downside. We become dependent on its magic. Motivation is the heartbreaking relationship that leaves you hanging, that leaves you waiting by the phone desperately hoping it will ring. When motivation doesn't come calling we wonder what is wrong with us. Why oh why didn't he call? Why do you build me up buttercup, just to let me down.

Eventually, most of us see the error of our ways when dealing with a toying partner like this and take the painful decision to dump them regardless of the wonderful promise. I urge you to do the same with motivation.

That is not to say you can't have the occasional naughty fling with it. If it happens to call up and take you out for a delightful evening of wining and dining then by all means go along for the ride, take full advantage, just don't expect it to call the next day. It probably won't.

You see, If you rely on motivation you sacrifice an opportunity to have a far more meaningful relationship. One with a guaranteed outcome.

Yes, get into bed with "action" immediately. Action is motivations more reliable older brother, every bit as good looking but with maturity and assurance. Action never lets you down, always calls back and doesn't play games.

Its a funny thing, because when you start a relationship with action, motivation takes an unpredictable u-turn, it comes running back pleading with you to give it a second chance. You're the one in control now, motivation wants to be involved with those who choose action.

Of course this is just a silly metaphor but it within it lies a very concrete message. Doing stuff regardless is what will make you successful. Waiting for motivation to whisk you off your feet is a fairy tale, a whirlwind romance is the best you can expect. Its time to let go of the dream and take a firm grasp on reality.

So what are you waiting for. Your time is now. Drop your drawers and get into bed with action. You'll have the time of your life.
