How To Beat Blue Monday And Have A Good Day

A clever stunt if you think about it, because what is the one thing people are craving in January? A holiday! So whilst their profits are going through the roof, the rest of us are expected to mope around, full of negativity because somebody, somewhere, decided that today has to be a bad day.

Today is Blue Monday, supposedly the most depressing day of the year.

After a bit of research, I discovered that Blue Monday was created in 2005 by a holiday company. A clever stunt if you think about it, because what is the one thing people are craving in January? A holiday! So whilst their profits are going through the roof, the rest of us are expected to mope around, full of negativity because somebody, somewhere, decided that today has to be a bad day.

I find this really sad, and I don't know about you, but I'm not going to let it affect my day. Nope! Instead, I'm going to make sure I'm even more positive than usual today.

Here are a few things you can do today to help you beat Blue Monday:

Get Outside

Go for a walk on your lunch break, or even just to the coffee shop around the corner. Fresh air will boost your mood instantly!

Plan Something

It doesn't need to be something extravagant. Book an appointment to get your nails done, a massage, or even just invite a good friend over for dinner and a bottle of wine at the weekend. January is a long month, so it's good to have things to look forward to.

Have Gratitude

Practising gratitude can have a powerful impact on your thought process, and how you react to different situations. If you start to feel low today, write down a couple of things for each of the following points:

- Today I am grateful for...

- What would make today great?

- People I am grateful for

- 3 Amazing things that happened today

Avoid negativity

Stay away from negative people, especially today! Instead, surround yourself with like-minded people who radiate positivity and inspire you. If you have a few negative work colleagues around you, take a break from your desk whenever you can and engage in conversation with someone who has a positive attitude.

Meditate

Even five minutes can make a huge difference in lifting your mood. Go and sit somewhere quiet and focus on your breathing for a few minutes. My favourite meditation app is "Calm", which I use whenever I need to re-connect and clear my mind.

Be Kind

Make sure you're extra kind today! Random acts of kindness are the best form of self-satisfaction. Even something as simple as a smile can make a difference.
