Coming from a large family where three of his older siblings were already teachers, perhaps it was inevitable that James found his way into the education sector. He studied and taught in his native Australia for a number of years before setting off to travel the world.

He started teaching in England in 1997 and his passion for teaching and learning saw him quickly progress to headship level. He has spent the last 10 years of his school leadership working in schools in challenging circumstances – with inspectors recently described him as 'highly effective' and having 'great determination'. Over the last 5 years he has carried out research into the benefits of school to school collaboration and he has a doctorate in organisational development and school improvement.

Another area of interest for James has been how games based learning can accelerate educational outcomes for children. The ability of on-line games to enhance learning saw him take on a role as one of the co-founders of Caped Koala Studio, developers of Pora Ora, an online environment aimed at ensuring a clear link between learning, games and parental involvement.
