Dr Richard Wellings is Deputy Editorial Director at the Institute of Economic Affairs. He was educated at Oxford and the London School of Economics, completing a PhD on transport and environmental policy at the latter in 2004. He joined the Institute in 2006 to work on the production of its monograph series and the journal, Economic Affairs. Richard is the author or editor of several papers, books and reports, including Towards Better Transport (Policy Exchange, 2008) and A Beginner’s Guide to Liberty (Adam Smith Institute, 2009). He is a Senior Fellow of the Cobden Centre and the Economic Policy Centre.

We Should Not Renationalise the Railways

Privatisation is often blamed for the shortcomings of Britain's railways. This is unfair. Genuine privatisation never happened. Nominal ownership may have been transferred to the private sector, but the government remains firmly in control.
