Londoners United Against the EDL

Posted: 30/07/11 08:35 BST

Under the banner United East End Londoners of all faiths and none gathered at the London Muslim Centre in Whitechapel last night to express solidarity with their Muslim neighbours who are the target of a provocative English Defence League demonstration planned for 3rd September.

It is impossible to overstate the importance of this resistance and solidarity in London in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Norway. Anders Breivik drew inspiration from the work of the EDL and signed his manifesto for a campaign of political violence against Muslims and multiculturalists under the English pseudonym Andrew Berwick of London.

Breivik's manifesto is not the work of a madman but rather a considered treatise on terrorism and political violence as a tactic to help bring about the kind of Europe the EDL wants to be part of. In it he demonstrates a keen understanding that for an act of terrorism to be truly effective it must shock society to the very marrow.

No doubt Breivik would assess that he had achieved part of his propaganda purpose if he had heard Steven Lennon the EDL leader expounding Islamophobic hatred while batting off softball interviews on TV and radio throughout the last week. Instead of being confronted with tough questioning on EDL violence and intimidation Lennon has been given a free ride to deliver his message of anti-Muslim hate in the mainstream media.

The full extent of Breivik's interaction with the EDL remains to be untangled but it is already sufficiently clear to send a warning signal to UK police. To date it is only good detective work and good luck that has prevented lesser but equally deadly terrorist attacks against Muslims and multiculturalism in the UK.

To illustrate briefly: Martyn Gilleard, a Nazi sympathiser was jailed in June 2008 after police found nail bombs, bullets, swords, axes and knives in his flat, as well as a note in which he had written, "I am so sick and tired of hearing nationalists talk of killing Muslims, of blowing up mosques, of fighting back... the time has come to stop the talk and start to act." On 15 January 2010 Terence Gavan, a former British National Party member and soldier, was convicted of manufacturing nail bombs and a staggering array of explosives, firearms and weapons. It was, Mr Justice Calvert-Smith said, the largest find of its kind in the UK in modern history.

Given that Breivik's manifesto evinces the same loathing of multicultural London as his convicted UK counterparts, it was appropriate that three Norwegian trade unionists attended last night's meeting to denounce the EDL and to expose the analysis it shares with Breivik and convicted terrorists in the UK.

It is also already sufficiently clear that EDL claims to be peaceful protestors are as paper thin as those of the BNP and National Front in the past. A growing number of EDL members face court proceedings following violence and intimidation at and after demonstrations against Muslim communities.

Significantly, the EDL regards the London Muslim Centre and its next door neighbour the East London Mosque as the hub of the Muslim extremism it purports to oppose. Regrettably, as London mayoral candidate Ken Livingstone highlighted at last night's meeting, Breivik and the EDL base their hate-filled analysis of Muslims on the work of mainstream commentators who should now reflect on the unintended if not unforeseeable consequences of their Islamophobic discourse.

The EDL should also reflect long and hard before demonstrating in East London on 3rd September. They are clearly not wanted by the local community. If they do come they will be dwarfed and eclipsed by a massive display of multicultural and inter-faith solidarity that will shame them and the media pundits they feed off.

No doubt the Met Police Commissioner and Home Secretary will reflect long and hard too before deciding to allow the EDL demonstration to take place. Last year United East End organised a peaceful counter-demonstration and the EDL stayed away. This year the EDL is bigger and bolder and wants desperately to bring large numbers to East London so as to intimidate Muslims in a show of strength.

The days of asking Muslims to stay indoors while allowing the EDL free passage must come to an end. East Londoners have a proud tradition of standing shoulder to shoulder against far right intimidation. Last night's meeting showed that the East End spirit that withstood Nazi bomber planes and Mosley's fascist black shirts in the last century is alive and well. It was a fitting end to a week dominated by Breivik's violent assault on multicultural solidarity.

This will be interesting to watch unfold. Although I find the EDL message repugnant, denying them the right of free speech would be problematic. This is a time when the media should use their influence proactively and demonstrate to the EDL that their message is not supported within the mainstream and that their plans to march may further erode what little support they have.

"...Although I find the EDL message repugnant,..."

Which one would that be, then? Just interested.

Usual sort of reaction I expect from the leftist intelligentsia, I do not consider the EDL to be racist the way you seem to need to paint it. It is an expression of a constituency that feels it has nowhere else to go...certainly not the BNP who will, of course, try to infiltrate and spoil as usual. It is also very telling of your own bias that you are able to denounce the violence at EDL rallies without mentioning the UAF.
Pretty poor and one-sided piece really.

What do you expect? Of course the EDL are going to attacked from the Left. They stand for everything that the Left opposes. Of course you know what the supreme irony is here don't you? If Britain ever did convert to Islam - who would be the first their police would arrest? Godless Left-wing infidels and intellectuals of course. I wonder at times what the Left think they are defending. But history of course is littered with pacts of convenience. For now the common enemy is the EDL.

I hadn,t thought about like that, I do feel quite heartened really, there was no upsurge in support for the BNP, the EDL formed instead, that is quite telling I think. The facism/racism thing is a cover for the hard-line communists who run the UAF, to get the usual "useful idiots" on board.
The bigger picture though is the shift of politics onto the streets, mainly because of the irrelevance of the Westminster and Brussels "bubbles" to the democratic process these days.

Excellent article. As a fellow Exonian and Huff Post UK blogger, I hope to make your acquaintance the next time the EDL turn up out west. It was great to see a handfull of them hounded away by over 100 anti-Fascists last time they reared their heads!

Another excellent article by Dr Lambert, the content of which is clearly absent from the mainstream media. He makes bold points which others fear to even allude to. The rising activity of the EDL is clearly disturbing and a serious threat to public security but Dr Lamberts voice raises awareness to this fact and tackles the issue on a number of levels.

MamaJoe, this is not an attack against you, but this article (as usual in the UK) reports on London, a place which is seen as the be all and end all in the UK today. Other (smaller) cities have had equal success in opposing the EDL in their area and it is rarely given any column inchs. Cardiff and Newport I have personally attended and in Newport the EDL didn't get off the train when they saw the opposition towards them and in Cardiff, a city that heavily prides itself on its multicultural success (being a former large dock town) the EDL were totally (and peacefully) outnumbered and demoralised. The usually demonised Cardiff City Football Club organised themselves to show solidarity with others in the city and were victim of a hate campaign for their pleasure. None of which gets reported and inevitibly leads to a situation where; if it hasn't happened in London (yet), then it hasn't happened at all.

WHY, hasn't it been reported? I don't live in London or anywhere close. I just rejoice when I hear of any opposition, so well done to you all. I'm glad that you are reporting it we need the "meeja" to get off their bums and do the job they are paid for instead of trawling through "celebrities" phones. This is important, that isn't.

Very good article,
The media should have realized that they made a big mistake!! Most if not all news reports and so called expert commentators insisted that Muslims were behind the attack. The call "you are innocent until you proved guilty" is not in their dictionary, unfortunately it is the other way round when it comes to Muslims.
I think it is the time now for the government to classify these extremists groups such EDL as an extremist right - wing organization and to devote similar resources to monitoring their activities as they do with other extremist groups.

As someone who helped to organise and chaired it, I was extremely proud of Friday's United East End rally. As Bob Lambert says, we came together as a community to successfully oppose the EDL in 2010 and we're more diverse and therefore stronger in 2011. There were many highlights from the rally, but I was particularly pleased that a member of the Tower Hamlets LGBT community was on the stage of a place that has been portrayed by some as a hot-bed of 'extremism' and homophobia. In addition, there were spekers from trade unions, the Somali community, the borough's inter-faith forum and a local synagogue. It's this kind of united front that is the answer to the EDL's message of hate and division, but in the wake of the Norway masacre, we need to re-doouble our efforts to make the 3rd September a massive demonstration of peace, tolerence and unity in Tower Hamlets.

United against the EDL?

Lets be more frank than Dr. Lamert is willing to be shall we.

The EDL is choosing London's East End for a VERY specific reason. The reason? Over the past years, Muslim groups in the area have been beating, threating and posting insulting posters against the gay community in the area. Some have been trying to spread the news that the area Mosque is spreading hate and extremism. Muslims have also been beating people they see with alcohol, religious teachers of non-muslim background, and more....all in the name of Sharia.
As of Friday, this same group again, organized by Anjem Choudry, has been putting up thousands (10-50,000 printed) of posters declaring London's East End a Sharia Controlled Zone.

So lets not make Muslims in the East End to feel victim. The EDL are visiting the area for a march to raise awareness; visiting. But those Muslims who are beating gays and spreading Sharia...they live there, they are staying there.
The day when LGBT peoples, non-muslims, and everyone else in the East End need to stay in-doors, while granting Sharia free reign, should never have come and needs to end.

Here are some sources to balance the outrageous bias;

It is just as easy to provide links showing right wing idiots attacking gays and so on, anjem choudry is a joke, he has a following of around twenty to thirty similar minded idiots and it shows how shallow your arguement actually is if you cite him as a reason. And in some parts of london the police uncovered that some anti gay posters put up where actually printed by right wing groups to demonise muslims, I am a Muslim and I would equally support my fellow gay londoners if theey felt threatened. And lastly citing the telegraph as a fair and balanced reporter of facts is actually farcical.

accrete786 - you say: "in some parts of london the police uncovered that some anti gay posters put up where actually printed by right wing groups to demonise muslims".

This is simply not true, it was a myth put about by the anti-racist left at the time of the anti-gay posters, and the myth said it was the EDL doing it. The true culprit was later identified from CCTV footage caught, and he was a muslim youth, the same boy caught as part of a group defacing Lynx bus shelter ads of semi-naked women - he's been prosecuted for both crimes.

It was NOT right wing groups. Unless you have some definite evidence that it was.

I glad to hear you personally would support gays in the Tower Hamlets area.
03:30 AM on 08/01/2011
Agree with accrete786's comment and add further reply only to take another angle. I notice that nothing here legitimizes the EDL's more extreme tactics on their own merits, but appears to be an attempt to justify those tactics by pointing to extremism on the "other side." The problem is, it doesn't matter if "they hit first" when we're talking about the EDL and some of their members inciting violence to make their political points. Their actions are wrong, and what you've shown here - even unqualified by accrete786's legitimate skepticism - are vastly insufficient to justify them.
