Amber Heard has announced that she is donating the $7 million (£5 million) divorce settlement she received from Johnny Depp to charity, splitting the cash between two organisations.

One of the charities who will receive funds is the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and will be used to work to “stop violence against women”, the actress explains in a statement.

The other half will go to a children’s hospital.

Her statement reads: “As described in the restraining order and divorce settlement, money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves.

“As reported in the media, the amount received in the divorce was $7 million and $7 million is being donated.

“This is over and above any funds that I have given away in the past and will continue to give away in the future.

“The donation will be divided equally between the ACLU, with a particular focus to stop violence against women, and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, where I have worked as a volunteer for the past 10 years alongside organisations like the Art of Elysium.

“Over the years, I have seen first hand how more funding for staffing, better equipment and better medication can make the difference between life or death for a child.

“I know these organisations will put the funds to good use and look forward to continuing to support them in the future.

“Hopefully, this experience results in a positive change in the lives of people who need it the most.”

Amber and Johnny agreed the terms of their settlement earlier this week, after one of the most high-profile celebrity splits in recent times.

The former couple issued a joint statement on their split on Tuesday (16 August), and their agreement came a day after reports the ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ actor once accidentally cut off the tip of his finger during a heated row were published.

A picture of the injury was also published on TMZ.

According to Amber, the actor then proceeded to dip his wounded finger into some dark blue paint, and scrawled a message accusing her of being unfaithful with her co-star, Billy Bob Thornton on a mirror.

She has profusely denied her ex-husband’s accusations of infidelity.

One section of their statement alluded to the report, and the fact Amber had accused Johnny of domestic violence, requesting a restraining order. She has now dropped her case.
