Presenter Carol Vorderman has labelled David Cameron as a "hypocrite" in the wake of the Panama Papers scandal.
The leak of 11 million documents which is exposing how the rich and powerful use tax havens to shield their wealth, involves Ian Cameron, the prime minister's father.
Downing Street issued a statement which said it was a “private matter” whether the Cameron family still had funds in offshore investments and insisted the PM was in the vanguard of efforts to increase the transparency of tax arrangements.
The backlash from Vorderman, who used to head a Conservative task force in mathematics, comes as many highlight the prime minister's stance on tax havens.
Labour MP Jess Phillips said: “If he’s not sure then he should find out and rectify it as soon as possible. While tax affairs for ordinary people are a private matter, he is a Prime Minister who has committed to stamping out tax avoidance.”
While Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn will today accuse David Cameron of “pussyfooting” around on tax dodging.
“It is time to get tough on tax havens. Britain has a huge responsibility. Many of those tax havens are British overseas territories or Crown Dependencies,” he will say.
Cameron's father Ian was the director of Blairmore Holdings Inc. which has been named in the Panama Papers.
More than 11 million documents were passed to German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung and shared by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) to 107 media organisations including The Guardian and BBC’s Panorama.
