David Bowie Tribute Concert Takes Place In New York

Debbie Harry, Cyndi Lauper and the Flaming Lips all took to the stage.

The first of two planned tribute concerts for David Bowie took place in New York on Thursday (31 March) night.

The event at Carnegie Hall saw famous faces including the Flaming Lips and Debbie Harry joining Bowie’s former collaborator Tony Visconti perform a selection of the megastar’s greatest hits.

Event organiser Michael Dorf had to turn away some A-listers who wanted to play, reports the Guardian, due to the sheer number of musicians who wanted to take part.

Blondie’s frontwoman Debbie performed her take on ‘Starman’, while Cyndi Lauper tackled ‘Suffragette City’.

'Always Crashing In The Same Car’ was tackled by Laurie Anderson, and other hits enjoyed by the audience included ‘Rebel Rebel’ and ‘Life On Mars’.

Tickets for the charity concert sold out in just two hours when it was announced earlier this year, leading to the addition of a second night.

Bowie’s death rocked the music world in January, and thousands of fans rushed to pay tribute to the star.

Flowers were left outside his former residence in Berlin and a London mural, as well as the home he shared in New York with wife Iman.

Lady Gaga was charged with performing a tribute to Bowie at the Grammys, though she left fans unimpressed.
