Pictures from Monday’s start of negotiations in Brussels have shown Brexit Secretary David Davis without notes or paperwork as he goes face-to-face with his nemesis, the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier.

All three EU officials had thick piles of papers in front of them but Davis, his lead negotiator and Britain’s EU ambassador had none (ok, Oliver Robbins, a senior civil servant, had a slim black notebook and a pen).
