BAFTA TV Awards 2016: Graham Norton Lampoons Sheridan Smith And Caroline Flack In Opening Monologue

Even the celebrities in attendance weren't safe.

Graham Norton was not pulling any punches during his opening monologue at this year’s TV BAFTAs, sending up a host of celebrities, including Sheridan Smith and Caroline Flack, both of whom were in attendance.

After sending up everybody from ‘The Jump’ contestant Sid Owen to Donald Trump, he moved on to the infamous ‘Cenotaph’ incident which occurred earlier this year, on the set of ‘Top Gear’.

The talk show host joked it was “the biggest U-turn” since Simon Cowell decided to re-hire Dermot O’Leary as presenter of ‘The X Factor’, to which the camera panned to a cringing Dermot in the audience.

Graham then stuck the boot into Caroline Flack, who was watching in the audience, as he remarked: “The writing was on the wall for Caroline… you could get better odds for Anne Boleyn returning to ‘Wolf Hall’.”

He didn’t leave it there, though, moving onto Sheridan Smith, more specifically an incident that reportedly occurred behind the scenes at ‘Funny Girl’.

“We’re all excited for a couple of drinks tonight,” Graham joked, “Or, as it’s known in theatrical circles, a few glasses of ‘technical difficulties’.”

Last week, Sheridan was forced to deny reports in the press that a performance of ‘Funny Girl’ had to be stopped early because she was drunk, with producers insisting that it was, in fact, due to technical difficulties.

Among this year’s big winners at the TV Baftas were ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, ‘Transparent’ and ‘This Is England ‘90’. Check out the full list of winners here.
