How To Clean Your Garbage Disposal With Citrus Peels

The Secret To Cleaning A Garbage Disposal Is...

The garbage disposal is a great kitchen gadget. It gets rid of our food waste and helps keep our trash from stinking up our house. Unfortunately, the appliance itself can start to have a nasty smell. Luckily, you can avoid this outcome with something that you just might have on-hand already: Lemon!

It's no secret that we are huge fans of finding new uses for old things. But it turns out that the citrus oils in lemon peels deodorize a garbage disposal just as effectively as conventional products. Here's how to use them:

For safety reasons, before cleaning your garbage disposal, be sure to turn off the power switch. Then, use tongs (it's best never to use your hands) to remove any non-disposable items that may be stuck inside. Next, fill the disposal with two cups of ice and one cup of rock salt. Turn the disposal on and run cold water for about five seconds. Then, plug your sink and fill it with two to four inches of water with the garbage disposal turned on. This will help purge the drain line ensuring all the waste has gone through the drain. Finally, run four to six lemon peels and cold water through the appliance. This will leave your garbage disposal fresh and without any lingering odors!
