An Irish waiter working in Texas was given a huge tip from a kind-hearted customer so he could visit family back home at Christmas.

Ben Millar, 22, was working in the restaurant when he got chatting to a customer named Jeffrey.

Millar told Jeffrey he hadn’t been home to Northern Ireland in two years and said he wished he could see his family more often.

Much to his surprise, the customer left him a tip of $750 (£602) and wrote a note on the receipt saying: “Hopefully, this can get you back to Ireland for the holidays.”

Millar is expecting a baby with girlfriend Taryn Keith, who shared a photo of the receipt on Facebook.

“My boyfriend got this tip last night at work,” she said.

“He’s from Ireland and is trying to take us back there once Killian is born so we can meet his family.

“Thought I would share it to show everyone that there is not only hate out there. Truly blessed.”

Keith’s post has been liked more than 1,000 times and hundreds of people have commented to express their amazement at the gesture.

Speaking to ABC news, Millar said he couldn’t believe his luck when he saw tip and wanted to thank the kind stranger.

“I also hope I can reach out to Jeffrey so he knows how much I appreciate it,” he said.

“It means a lot to me, but more to my family back home who will benefit from seeing me again since almost two years.”
