The statement given by the singer's publicist states that Linda had a "short but fierce battle with cancer".

It continues: "Surrounded by her husband and loved ones, she passed away peacefully at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

"Sir Tom and his family have asked for privacy at this difficult time and no further information is currently available."

The sad news comes just a week after Tom cancelled his Asia tour, due to a "serious illness" in his immediate family.

The couple first met when they were just 12 years old, and married at 16.

In his 2015 autobiography, 'Over The Top And Back', Tom discussed his wife's health, stating that she had previously had two cancer scares.

"She's the most important thing in my life," Tom said in a recent interview (via Daily Mail).

"An unbelievable woman. Linda is the love of my life and she still is, even though she doesn't look like she did.

"I don't look like I did, either, but I try my best."
