A man has been arrested on suspicion of GBH after an NHS worker was injured in Newham University Hospital.

Police were called in the early hours of Wednesday morning to reports of a stabbing at the hospital, the Metropolitan Police said.

The victim, 50, a member of the nursing team, sustained multiple knife injuries caused by a pair of scissors.

She was admitted to a ward, received treatment and has now been discharged home, hospital staff have confirmed.

Shane Degaris, deputy group chief executive of Barts Health NHS Trust, told HuffPost UK: “This was a shocking and senseless attack on a member of staff doing their duty.

“The Trust condemns any form of violence and aggression against our dedicated and hard-working staff. In the light of this incident we are reviewing security at all our hospitals to ensure the safety of all our staff and patients at all times.”

The male suspect, 27, was arrested at the scene and remains in an east London Police Station where he is currently being questioned.
