Police are still hunting for James Whitlock, 31, who escaped with Baker from the Category B prison in north London on Monday.

The BBC reported he had been on remand charged with conspiracy to steal from 19 cash machines across south-east England between last December and August.

Whitlock is described as a white man of slim build, and has the word “Tracy” tattooed on his torso.

It was reported at the time that the men used pillows to make it look as though they were asleep in bed while the pair used diamond cutters to break out of the category B prison.

Pentonville is home to some 1308 prisoners. Its buildings date back to 1840.

Local MP Emily Thornberry has called for the prison to be closed down.

The Islington South and Finsbury MP told the Islington Gazette: “People don’t seem to be safe inside Pentonville, and now it transpires inmates can escape. That is the final straw.

“If they don’t have control of the place, what is the point in it being there?”
