Rescued from poachers in a daring night-long raid at the Indo-Nepal border near Jharkhand, 6

year old female sloth bear ‘Suma’ celebrates a year of freedom with wildlife conservation

    organisation Wildlife SOS.

Suma was on the verge of becoming yet another victim of illegal animal trade, when she was

rescued by the Wildlife SOS anti-poaching unit from Giridih, Jharkhand in 2015. The team

received a tip-off about a group of poachers who were attempting to smuggle her into Nepal,

where the inhumane ‘dancing bear’ practise still persists at large.

Like most captive sloth bears, at the time of her rescue, Suma was in a miserable condition and

her canines had been smashed and her delicate muzzle crudely pierced, leaving painful scars

across her muzzle. Today, after a year of undergoing medical treatment and the untiring efforts

made by the organisation’s veterinarians, Wildlife SOS happily celebrates the first anniversary

of Suma's much deserved freedom with us.
