Primark has announced it is launching a sustainable cotton line.
The fast fashion giant has partnered with agricultural industry experts CottonConnect and the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) with the aim of improving sustainable cotton production to make a meaningful difference for cotton farmers.
This is an important move because it’s all very well having your garments made sustainably (this means having a factory that is periodically checked), but knowing the source of materials like cotton can prove to be very tricky.
At the moment Primark is using the sustainably sourced cotton in just one line of pyjamas, but it has big plans for the future.
“Our long-term ambition is to ensure that all the cotton we use is sustainably sourced,” said Katherine Stewart, Primark’s ethical trade and environmental sustainability director.
“For us, sustainable cotton is about reducing the environmental impact of cotton production, improving the livelihoods of the farmers, and doing so in a way that means we continue to deliver great value to our customers,” added Stewart.
Post Rana Plaza, there has been a collective move towards consciousness in our consumer behaviour and shoppers are demanding more transparency on supply chains from the high street.
One thing that won’t be changing any time soon is Primark’s penchant for low prices.
At £6, these sustainably sourced cotton pyjamas will cost about as much as a weekday lunch.
