Drones are expensive, in fact an advanced quadcopter can easily cost you anywhere between £800-2,000 depending on the model you choose.
Regardless of the cost, they’re never worth putting your life in danger for.
Unfortunately that’s precisely what one student did at nearly 3 in the morning when his DJI drone crashed into the water surrounding St. Kilda Pier in Victoria, Australia.
He had been filming a university project video with friends at the time.
The 22-year-old then made the infinitely sensible decision of diving into the water after his drone, not realising that there was in fact no way for him to get back out of the water.
As Nine News Melbourne reports, the student had to rely on friends to create an escape rope using their own clothes to keep him from drifting away from the pier.
According to Mashable, the student (referred to only as Singh), had been in the water for around 30 minutes during which the ordeal effectively left him with hypothermia.
The local police soon arrived at the scene and were able to help Singh escape from the water, without his drone.
Nine News confirms that one of their own cameramen was able to dive down and retrieve the drone with the memory card still functioning.
So there we have it, while we all enjoy a good drone-saving video this incident definitely shows us where the line is.
