It’s less than two months since Scooter Braun royally pissed off Taylor Swift after buying her entire back catalogue, but the music manager isn’t going to let a major feud get in the way of him praising her latest album (the only one he doesn’t own).
Scooter – who manages pop heavyweights Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber – took to Twitter on Friday morning to congratulate Taylor on the release of Lover, which is released today.
“Regardless of what has been said the truth is you don’t make big bets unless you are a believer and always have been,” he tweeted. ”Brilliant album with #Lover. Congrats @taylorswift13. Supporting was always the healthier option #brilliantalbum #brilliantcampaign congrats.”
Taylor has yet to respond to the tweet, but her legion of loyal fans certainly have – and they are NOT happy.
Scooter’s tweet of support comes just a day after Taylor revealed plans to re-record her entire back catalogue, after fellow US singer Kelly Clarkson suggested she did just that last month.
During an interview with a US TV show, the singer was asked if she would consider re-recording her old material so she could own the new versions.
She replied: “Oh, yeah.” Asked if that is what she plans to do, she added: “Yeah, absolutely.”
Scooter and Taylor became involved in a public row after she branded him a bully when it was revealed the master copies of her former tracks had been sold by her former label.
The 29-year-old had been signed to Big Machine Records since her music career started as a teen, and the label owned the rights to her first six albums, including 2008’s Fearless and 2014’s 1989.
In June, Scooter Braun company’s Ithaca Holdings announced that it had acquired Big Machine Records in a deal believed to be worth around £237 million, meaning he owned the master recordings of all of Taylor’s previous releases.
Taylor signed with Universal Music Group in November last year, in a deal ensuring she maintained the rights to her work.
On Friday morning, Taylor alluded to the fact she no longer owns her previous work as she promoted the release of Lover on Twitter.
“This album is very much a celebration of love, in all its complexity, coziness, and chaos. It’s the first album of mine that I’ve ever owned, and I couldn’t be more proud,” she tweeted.
