Being diagnosed with HIV is not a death sentence.

In fact, with the right treatment, those who find out they’re HIV-positive can live long and otherwise healthy lives.

So it’s not surprising those affected don’t welcome the question “how long have you got left?” from friends, family and sometimes complete strangers.

In the BBC3 video above, a group of people who’ve been diagnosed reveal the indelicate reactions they encounter on a daily basis.

From “how did you get it?” to “you’re so brave”, never say these phrases to a person who has HIV.
