Forget Gerrard and Co. Bask in the Glory of Britain's Sporting Success.

As I sat there watching the last few seconds tick ever closer to confirming England's place a-top of the Women's Rugby Union World, I asked, we aren't that bad at sport are we? ... we are actually in a golden period for British sport. If you go through the most popular sports in the UK, you will find we have world beaters everywhere, including football.

After the huge disappointment that was the World Cup in Brazil, the common opinion amongst the nation seemed to be "well we're rubbish aren't we?" This tends to spill over into other matters outside of the men's team. Isn't the government rubbish? Isn't the British weather rubbish? Why are we always rubbish at sports compared to the Germans/Brazilians/Americans/Chinese etc?

Well as much as the government will always have their problems and the weather will be rainy at times, we are actually in a golden period for British sport. If you go through the most popular sports in the UK, you will find we have world beaters everywhere, including football.

Yes, England (sorry Britain but we will come back to you later) are very good at football. Whilst the men's senior team let us down tournament after tournament, the youth levels have been winning trophies and making finals. From as far back as 2009 the success started with the U21s reaching the European Championship final. Doing so by winning a penalty shoot-out. Spot kicks helped us again this summer when the U17s won the tournament against the Netherlands in May.

On the women's side we have a genuine world class star in Kelly Smith, although age is an issue. She has helped England become a force again, a team that could go far in the World Cup in Canada next year. It wasn't too long ago when England made the European Championship final, only to lose to one of the best women's teams ever in Germany.

Then there is cricket. Despite a tough year or so for the men's team they did win three ashes series in a row and have just beaten India, once a top team in Test cricket, quite comprehensively. In the one day game they haven't faired as well but they did win the Twenty20 World Cup in 2010. As for the Women's team they are the pretty much the best in the world. They matched the men in the Twenty20 a year earlier and won the World Cup that same year. As for the Ashes, England have won 5 of the last six contests with Australia.

England's men will hope to emulate their female counterparts in the Rugby World Cup on home soil next year. Everyone has fond memories of their World Cup victory and we shouldn't forget they made the final again four years later. Add to that a 6 nations win between Wales and Ireland victories and a Lions tour win in Australia.

How about tennis? Two words. Andy Murray. We finally saw a British (male) win Wimbledon, which followed his US Open victory.

There is another non-Englishmen making headway from our shores in the golf with Rory McIlroy who has become one of the best golfers around. The English lads are always there or there abouts and you never know Lee Westwood might still win a major.

In the last decade we have had two British Formula 1 World Champions. Lewis Hamilton, champion in 2008, is challenging again for his second title. Jenson Button won in 2009. In the MotoGP the days of Carl Fogarty have long gone but we still have two top riders in Carl Crutchlow and Moto2 champion Scott Reading.

And it is almost impossible to list the great sporting achievements this country has had without mentioning Team GB and the London Olympics. A successful summer which has continued into the Commonwealth games in Glasgow and in Zurich last week for the European Championships.

Elsewhere we've had world champion boxers and two winners of the Tour de France.

So the message is not to assume that we Brits/English/Scots/Welsh/Irish are no longer a force in the sporting world because our football team doesn't impress on the world stage, it doesn't mean we aren't any good. Let's not rest the hopes of a nation on one particular team. British sport is booming and it doesn't look like stopping for a while. Let us embrace it and enjoy it. Because we are winners!
