Alan Pardew haters were given more fuel to add to their already substantial fire on Monday night, as Newcastle laboured to yet another Premier League defeat against Stoke.
Although the Magpies boss somehow still seems to have the backing of club owner Mike Ashley, this will not stop the inevitable speculation over his future unless he is suddenly able to turn round the side's relegation form.
One would imagine that Ashley will eventually have to sack his man if the drop is looming later in the season. If he does, then one man Toon fans would surely love to see in charge is David Moyes.
Despite his well documented frustration at Manchester United, the Scot is a highly respected manager with unquestioned ability. He may just be the man that Newcastle need to turn them into a consistent top-half side.
He is certainly one of the best Pardew replacement options out there and here are five reasons that prove why.
5. He Would Love to Turn the Club Around
Moyes played a huge part in making Everton the stable upper mid-table club that they are today.
Before he took the helm they regularly flirted with relegation, but when the time came for him to leave for Manchester United, Everton were fully established in the top-half and contenders for European football.
Newcastle have the resources to sustain the sort of success that Everton are currently enjoying, they just need a manager to guide the team in the right direction.
Turning Newcastle United from an inconsistent conundrum into reliable side would be a job that Moyes would relish, and one that he would be more than up to.
4. He Could Become a Cult Hero
Newcastle is a city that lives and breathes football. One where seated fans can be seen in the ground from all around the city on a match day. It is a city where cult heroes are born.
The most recent examples are Hatem Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye and to some extent, Demba Ba. Even these players only enjoyed success at the club for a short time.
If Moyes were to take over at St James Park and transform the fortunes of the side, then he would become an idol on Tyneside for the foreseeable future.
It has been a long time since the Magpies have had a successful manager and it seems that the time is ripe for a new man to enter the frame.
3. Newcastle Have Substantial Resources
Although they are not on the same level as the Manchester Citys and Chelseas of this world, the Toon are still one of the best supported clubs in England and are a globally recognised brand.
Moyes' time at Everton was marked by austerity and the feat he achieved with the club was emphasised by the lack of funds he received to bring in players.
Newcastle are certainly better stocked than the Toffees in this department.
If club owner Mike Ashley did appoint the Scot to replace Pardew, then he would more than likely give him the funds to form the core of his own side, helped by the highly acclaimed scouting department at the club.
2. The Weight of Expectation Would Not be as Great
One of the major factors that led to Moyes' torrid time at Manchester United was the colossal weight of expectation from fans, the media and the football world in general.
This was encapsulated when Moyes admitted that he did not substitute a half-fit Robin van Persie because he feared the backlash of fans.
Newcastle supporters would not expect anywhere near as much as success-spoilt Manchester United fans, especially with their club currently languishing in the Premier League relegation zone.
If Moyes were to take up the hot-seat, then all he would have to do for one season at least is avoid relegation before building on that. Even then the spotlight on him would shine not nearly as bright.
1. Newcastle Are a Sleeping Giant
Due to a number of factors including geography, Newcastle are a club that do not have as much success as they perhaps should considering their size.
For a club that averages over 50,000 fans per match, you would expect better than to be constantly flirting with relegation.
Nevertheless, like a young player, Newcastle are a club with huge potential who could surpass the likes of Everton if they were taken in the right direction.
If Moyes could deliver and help Newcastle reach the success that their fans deserve, then he could convert the Magpies job to one of the most attractive in world football.
