After directing a series of landmark films for Channel 4, Jon Dower completed his first feature documentary ‘Liver Forever’ in 2001, a comedy about and the rise and fall of Britpop.

He followed that with ‘Once in a Lifetime’ and ‘Thriller in Manila’, which was in competition for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, received a BAFTA nomination and won Best Sports Documentary at the Banff World Television Awards as well as the Peabody Award 2010.

His most recent documentary for BBC 3, OUR CRIME: RIOT, will air on Monday 9 April.

I live in Streatham, south London, near Brixton, famous for riots in the 1980s, but also on the edge of Clapham in an area affectionately nicknamed 'Nappy Valley' by the locals. Nappies and pushchairs there are aplenty. Violent disorder, not so much.

Yet that all changed in August last...
