If 2011 goes down in history as the year of Arab revolutions, then there is hope 2012 will be the year democracy triumphs. Across the world, from Russia to the continent of Africa - where my country of Sierra Leone is holding Presidential and Parliamentary elections this year - so many countries are in need of governments that are in tune with the needs of their people.
And in Sierra Leone a positive new direction needed. Our current government has been in the news of late, and not for the right reasons. From allegations of corruption levelled at the Vice-President's office by Al-Jazeera, to Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index showing an increase in corruption in the country, to the Mayor of Freetown arraigned before the courts on a 25 count charge of corruption, the outlook is not good.
For the 400,000 Sierra Leoneans living in the UK, this is worrying. Many arrived as refugees during the years of bitter civil war that followed 18-years of one-party rule by the All People's Congress, the party of the current President who was democratically elected in 2007. Many wish to return home, and though while in the UK some have become distant from the party-politics of their homeland, others frustrated by the speed of change in Sierra Leone are forming online groups and helping to campaign for a new direction in the country's governance this year.
In part this is because the APC - the party of the current Vice President, the Mayor of Freetown and the current President - has not been as supportive of democracy as people once hoped. In September last year, I was stoned and hospitalised by government supporters while a attending a rally that was intended to launch my candidacy for the elections. Rallies were then banned by the police in a serious blow against freedom of speech.
In early January following a shock victory in a local election by my Sierra Leone People's Party in the Western Provinces - a part of the country long considered a stronghold of the APC - the newly elected representative was stabbed in the leg and then beaten by police. After waking up from a coma in hospital, he has now been left to languish in prison after being denied bail by the courts.
It was an absence of democracy, freedom of speech and a serious ethnic imbalance in government that led to civil war, and it only ended when free and fair elections returned in 1996.
No Sierra Leonean wants such atrocities to happen again, and it only the safety valve of the ballot box which can ensure it.
Yet at the same time Sierra Leoneans need more than the knowledge that elections will be free and fair. As it was once said in America, "you cannot offer a hungry man the Constitution". The people of Sierra Leone need to see with their own eyes and feel the difference in their pockets that the economic and social development of the country is moving in the right direction.
If our President is to be believed, then Sierra Leone is booming. Supported by Tony Blair and international lobbyists, he has taken this message around the world. But good PR is no substitute for the truth. When political appointments have been made nearly exclusively from the President's own tribe, his Vice President's aides have been caught on camera offering to lift bans on illegal timber contracts and Colonel Gaddafi gifted honorary membership of the Sierra Leonean parliament, there is so clearly much that is rotten.
The people of Sierra Leone know this. And the Sierra Leonean Diaspora in the UK knows this too. This is why so many of them are now rallying for change.
For ordinary Sierra Leoneans, life has become much harder. Rice, flour and fish - the essential foodstuffs of our people - have doubled in cost since 200710. Fuel prices have rocketed. Five million Sierra Leoneans remain in desperate poverty. This decline is in contradiction to a Government that portrays itself as spearheading an economic boom.
That's why a change of leadership cannot come soon enough. There must be a newfound coherence in our economic policies and development goals. Foreign investment must be agreed transparently and in the public domain to protect our natural resources and people and bring our hardworking but increasing disillusioned youth into employment.
When I campaign across the country this year I will put forward a positive message to those yearning for a better life. Sierra Leone, and the African continent, has much to offer the world economy. Direct capital investment is only just beginning to flow. Under responsible leadership, working closely with our development partners, we can seize this opportunity. A modern market economy can exist, our reliance on foreign aid is not permanent and when the world emerges from these dark economic times, our nation will be ready to grasp every opportunity that comes its way.
However none of this will be possible if our government does not demonstrate willingness to operate freely and fairly. Economic growth will never materialise while Mr Koroma presides over at best incompetent and at worst corrupt stewardship of our economy while simultaneously undermining the political process. These coming months are therefore a chance for Mr Koroma, and the entire Sierra Leonean political class to demonstrate that we are the guardians of our nations resources and that we respect the rights, desires and freedoms of our citizens.
Our country has been through tough times - through dictatorship, civil war economic collapse. I am determined that we shall not return to those dark days. And I am also determined come election day the positive momentum towards respect for democracy and the will of the people will reach Sierra Leone.

Maada Bio - you give the impression that you are in touch with the needs and interests of Sierra Leone. Can you please tell us what your plans and policies are and demonstrate that they can be financed and delivered.
While you are at it - as you are clearly able to use media outlets like the Huffington Post to spread your propaganda - can we have a public assurance from you that if elected one of the hallmarks of your adminstration would be freedom of speech and a free press.
A Luke (UK)
None of your criticisms have alluded to or even recognised the valid points made by Julius Maada Bio in the article. All Sierra Leoneans should want a free and fair election this time round. It is not a concern that people are being beaten and public rallies banned? The fact that they may be denied this by the recent actions of the APC is of grave concern. EVIDENCE – beatings, banning of political rallies, the departure of the UN representative.
Overall, there is clear, substantiated evidence from impartial sources on the ground that political freedoms are being curtailed and that basic human rights are not being respected by the APC and Koroma. Even Human Rights Watch has expressed concern: Here is a quote for their most recent report: ‘Serious deficiencies in the judicial system persist, including extortion and bribe-taking by officials’ while the UN Development report has clearly shown how much Koroma has failed, where Sierra Leone ranked 180th out of 182 countries for overall development.
UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs report said that Sierra Leone had the world's worst indicators for infant mortality (123 deaths per 1,000 live births) and maternal mortality (the lifetime risk of maternal death is 1 in 8). There must be a change of leadership to reverse this terrible decline.
Are now going to defend these facts?
Yes it is fact that President Koroma is currently engaged in arbitrary arrest and imprisonment of opposition members just to salient them. You will not succeed in doing this Mr President.
The days when your political mentor used to arrested, detain and kill SLPP members is far gone. The world is now a global village where the international community eyes are widely open to deal with any dictator.
All the article stated are facts to the letter. Forget about Western Area or Region. The fact of the matter is president koroma is engaged in abusing the fundamental human rights of SLPP members with impunity whilst Sylvia who will soon wed the President’s younger brother is using her ilk journalistic muscle to pollute people’s brain.
Sylvia and Kabs Kanu, we Sierra Leoneans are no longer fools so we will use our heads and hearts when voting on 17 November 2012. We are ready to tell President Koroma that the days when politicians feel that they can violate and intimidate us are over.
President Koroma is tribalistic, nepotic, corrupt and a dictator so he must go.
You had an affair with a well known figure in the Sierra Leone People's Party it did not work out now you are having an affair with President Bai Koroma's younger brother. This shows how you can easily change. You know what is happening in Sierra Leone but because you hate Julius Maada Bio and things did not work out between the person you had the affair with in SLPP, that is why you write false informations about Bio and the SLPP.
Like I said earlier I am the women's leader SLPP UK&IRELAND, I can asure you that we the women are ready to support Julius Maada Bio all the way and ensure that he wins come NOVEMBER 2012.
As an APC mouthpiece Kabs Kanu should know what he says that does not go back at his party. Remember when you point one finger at someone, four other fingers are pointing at you.
Except if Mr Kanu is a Reverent in the kingdom of Lucifer, else he should be able to clearly pronounce to the world that Maada was not even in Sierra Leone at the time of the extra judicial killings. Maada initiated the peace process with the rebels which peace we all enjoy today. Why cant you give praise where praise is due. Why cant you confirm the economic woos and suffering of the masses in that country? Why do you have to be this selfish and care less about the masses? Reverent my foot. While I accept that the current APC may have made efforts to complete some SLPP initiated projects, the rate of corruption and economic mismanagement and is nothing to write home about.
It is clear that after your APC has failed the nation by inflicting suffering on the population most of who can hardly afford a square meal a day while you continue to spend lavishly on your family and friends, all you think you can do is bring in irrelevant issues.
The Mayor of Freetown has pocked over $400,000 by illegitimate means; Customers cannot withdraw money from bank, as there is no money in almost all the banks in our country. Thus how can Sierra Leoneans support a government that is not accountable and practice corruption to the highest level.
There has been evidence of corruption at the highest levels of the Koroma administration. Provide a link to the Al-Jazeera documentary: http://www.aljazeera.com/programmes/africainvestigates/2011/11/20111123134340348960.html
President Koroma’s government has committed ICC prosecutable crime against opposition members and yet still Sylvia the false doctor and her partner in crime (Kabb- Kanu) would like Sierra Leoneans to support Koroma’s government and hence continue suffering.
The concerns outlined have been echoed by the Economist. Diplomats on the ground, who should of course be seen as impartial and non-partisan, have accused Koroma of forcing out the UN representative to bolster his election chances, even though this individual was seen to be doing an excellent job. The link is here http://www.economist.com/node/21547869. You can also quote the economist directly: ‘Given how much blood and treasure it has expended in Sierra Leone, the episode damages its credibility. It also bodes ill for the coming election.’

I am surprised that the HuffPost article on Maada Julius Bio omitted the Fact that under Bio's watch 39 Sierra Leonean Civilians including a PREGNANT WOMAN were murdered with out trial. Your reporter did not conduct Due Diligence before submitting the article.
I am suggesting you publish an update of Bio which give the full report and explanation of his Responsibilty and Accountablity For the MURDER OF THIRTY NINE SIERRA LEONEANS INCLUDING A PREGNANT WOMAN.

Sierra Leone: More Revelation On Schulenburg Saga...gov't Requested Mohamed Bangura's Accreditation ...also Sponsored His UN Mission
By Moses A. Kargbo, 22 February 2012
Signed documents now in the possession of Concord Times revealed that the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Sierra Leone to the United Nations - at the behest of the government of Sierra Leone - officially applied to the UN body for accreditation to be given UDM's Mohamed Bangura to witness the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2011.
TAKE THE LOG OUT OF YOUR EYES BEFORE YOU TRY TO TAKE THE SPECK OUT OF YOUR NEIGHBOUR'S. YOU ARE MEANT TO BE A MAN OF GOD, BUT AS THE BIBLE SAYS, JUDGEMENT FOR THE LIKES OF YOU WILL START AT THE ALTAR. YOUR BELOVED COUNTRY? READ YOUR RAG SHEET WITH THE EYES OF A NON-PARTISAN OR FOREIGN NATIONAL AND TELL ME YOU LOVE YOUR COUNTRY!
I stand by my criticism of Mr. Maada Bio.Judgement will start with despicable hypocrites like you who know the atrocities that Maada Bio committed in Sierra Leone, his dangerous nature, his recent injection of violence in our political process and still you do not want people to talk about it. Your own judgement will be harsher.Read the Biblical books of Isaiah , Jeremiah and others and hear what these prophets proclaimed on people like you who want to shield blood-thirsty killers who deprive innocent people of their lives for nothing.
Did the so-called facts you have published about corruption change the fact that Maada Bio is a violent, bloody and vicious character who is not fit to be President of Sierra Leone ? Do the facts you have submitted change the fact that Maada Bio killed 29 innocent people for which the families have demanded an inquest ? Do these facts change the fact that Maada Bio engaged in racketeering with our country's passports ? What change can a killer and a racketeer bring to a country ?
I do not want to talk with your kind. Let Maada Bio who wrote the article come out himself and dispute the facts many of us have provided. Most of you are nothing but puppets and paid hirelings of a killer. And you talk of judgement ? May God have mercy on your soul.
****It is clear that a foreign Public Relations firm has been hired for Bio. There is no way Bio will refer to a Western PROVINCE. This is the work of a hired PR company who are not familiar with fact that Salone doesn't have a WESTERN PROVINCE but a western AREA. Foreign PR guys also seriously botched their explanation of what happened to who in Fourah Bay. They are lumping developments surrounding Lans Fadika with Aziz Carew and Mohamed Kanu-Mansaray all into one. For those who think I exagerate when I say that Bio has SERIOUS external monetary funding from non-Sierra Leonean sources, you have your answer in this piece in Huffington Post. It is the work of a hired PR firm under the direction of NON SIERRA LEONEANS. Any Sierra Leonean directing such a media campaign would have spotted and corrected such glaring errors. May God help our country. This Oil and Iron Ore!
Let us even agree with you that Marda Bio has hired a foreign PR firm. What is wrong with that? Is that not what all serious minded politcians do, even in the west. You think why Obama won in 2007? He had a very strong PR machinery?. Is Tony Blair not doing more than a paid for PR work for President, Ernest Koroma?
But to even think that to write an article of this nature and have it published in huffingtonpost will require a hired PR guru makes me think of the shakespearian addage of one mirroring onesself in another person. I guess that is what exactly you always do in Sierra Leone - doing the PR thingy for our president and almost every politician including Foday Sankoh of cursed memory, who can pay you money or something else.

[I}n his capacity as Chairman of the NPRC, Brigadier J.M. Bio himself on the 1st February 1996 few days before he left office, caused the government to pay into the account of his private firm, P.Banga Investment Limited the sum of Le235, 000,000 in respect of contracts that the firm had purportedly entered into with government for the supply of spare parts for the replacement of helicopter engines which did not belong to Government. Incidentally, it was into the account of this same firm in the Channel Islands that Brigadier Bio paid his own share of US$400,000 from the passport deal which was disclosed recently.”
I am sure you will agree with me that these are grave allegations. It is therefore surprising to me and a number of persons I have spoken to that not once in your maiden address did you mention any of these allegations contained in H.E. Kabba’s speech. Especially so as in your address you spoke strongly against corruption.
I hope you will make a statement answering the assertions contained in the address of H.E Tejan Kabba --Excerpt from RHO Robbin-Coker's open letter, September 9. 2011
