Helping Others and Helping Yourself

I often quote the words of former United States Ambassador to the United Nations and U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright who once said: "There is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women."

We were thrilled to have Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild, CEO of EL Rothschild, speaking at our latest everywomanClub event about The Henry Jackson Initiative for Inclusive Capitalism. 'Towards a More Inclusive Capitalism' is seeking solutions to the problems that still exist resulting from the global financial crisis of five years ago.

The Initiative has identified three areas where companies and institutions can help make a positive difference. It believes they can help address the gap between employer needs and employee skills, they can nurture start-ups and SMEs and they can replace today's focus on short-term performance with a longer-term strategic approach.

Club members were inspired to hear about some of the work companies like Burberry, Rolls-Royce and HP - to name just a few - are doing to improve the environment for business and the economy as part of the initiative. Several members were already looking into ways to get their businesses involved.

Another activity our everywomanNetwork members have been engaged in is CNN International's Wisdom of Women campaign. In honour of International Women's Day, which is coming up on the 8th of March, CNN International is gathering quotes from women that people have found inspiring.

We had some time with Becky Anderson, who is one of CNN International's highest profile anchors, and she shared her thoughts on the importance of role models and planning your career. We're looking forward to CNN International unveiling what they've done with all the 'wisdom of women' on International Women's Day

I often quote the words of former United States Ambassador to the United Nations and U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright who once said: "There is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women." Helping one another and sharing our knowledge, whether through informal networking or structured mentoring, is just one of the many ways women can help other women in their careers. But it is of course also important to put time into helping yourself.

We'll be unveiling a new campaign on International Women's Day to help women realise their career amibitions, so we're looking forward to the 8 March!
