Ever fancied becoming a rock star? Well you can if you have got an iPhone and a guitar...

We talked to Jake Bugg to find out the what kick-started his impressive career so far. Was it down to a rich uncle with bags of cash to throw at him and to put him in a flash studio? Perhaps he thought about parading in front of a panel of celebrities on a TV talent show? Bollocks to that - this man did it all by having bags of talent and an iPhone... and he didn't have a pot to piss in when he started out.

It was through this raw talent, a bit of advice and starting promote his music locally through his local BBC Introducing radio station that Jake Bugg's music caught the attention of the masses... oh, and a record company. While still a teenager the little blighter had a number one album; which is both inspiring to us X-Factor haters, and promising to any of you who write and play your own music.

If you want to record and sell your own music these days you don't even need to be fussy about going into a flash studio- and definitely forget the limo and powered white stuff. (Unfortunately those days seem to be locked in a time capsule but they do sound incredibly fun and I'm infinitely jealous not to have been part of it.) Times have changed my friends; and without sounding too much like an old giffer - who would have known 20 years ago that people would be releasing music that had been recorded onto a mobile phone? Here is the man himself to tell you all about his rise to fame and the changing face of rock n' roll...

If you want to help Jake Bugg to find a decent emerging band to support him and some other awesome acts on the mainstage bill at Beach Break Live this year, check out the shortlist of acts in the running for this competition on the Emerging Icons website and vote for which one you think should get the gig. If you vote you can win a number of prizes including Pure Wireless S3 Jongo speakers and Onkyo Headphones, as well as some festival tickets and Jake Bugg merch.

If you are in a band or just starting out as a musician you can sign up on unsignedbandreview.com to get to the ears of credible industry folk who know a thing or two about music. You can even send your iPhone recorded demo to Jake Bugg's record label, and follow in his footsteps if you think that you've got what it takes. This is where Universal Music are sending bands and artists to if they want to be heard - because many of their A&R scouts listen to and review acts that are signed up on this platform. Helpful? We'll see you on the pyramid stage at Glastonbury in 2014 then!
