Kent Page is part of UNICEF’s immediate response team, which was rushed into the Philippines after Super Typhoon Haiyan struck on 8 November. Page has worked for UNICEF in West and Central Africa, Central Asia and Latin America and completed stints with UN missions in Angola, Liberia and Rwanda during the 1990s.

I recently visited one of the coastal neighbourhoods hardest hit by super typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Thousands of people had lived in this shantytown, known locally as a 'barangay', located just 200 meters from the ocean's edge.
