As winter creeps in it's getting a lot harder to keep up the motivation to go outside and keep up the fitness routine. It's too much of a temptation to stay inside, wrap up in a blanket and watch T.V.

Fortunately, you can get the best of both worlds and get fit while staying at home! Here are 5 ways to keep up your fitness at home.

1. Take The Stairs

Taking the stairs is a tried and tested method of keeping fit. There are even stair workouts you can do that barely take any time and really get your heart racing.

It's all about breaking a sweat and working your muscles hard and the stairs provide everything you need for a leg day style work out. But even if you don't want to do the full workout just make sure you're going up and down the stairs regularly.

2. Gardening

There's still a little time left in the year for gardening and it is perhaps one of the best workouts you can get at home for any discipline. It does involve going outside but it's a great way to spend a dry Saturday. A few weeks back I was wheelbarrowing gravel about 25 meters down a garden. Shoveling it in, wheeling it down, shoveling it out.

An hour later and I was exhausted! A stiff back the next day and muscle pain all across my shoulders. A fantastic and free workout.

3. Yoga

You don't need to love pumpkin spice lattes and meditate every day to enjoy yoga. It's a great stress buster and fitness promoter that you can do right in your own home, there are loads of great video lessons that help you get started, you just need a bit of clear floor space and you can be on your way.

4. Calf Raises In The Kitchen

A great little tip I first started doing while working retail. Although it's not the most intense work out every little helps and you can quite easily stand in the kitchen stirring a pot while doing calf raises.

Feet shoulder width apart, up onto your toes and then slowly back down again. You'll be amazed how quickly it becomes difficult. Just don't overdo it or you'll be limping the next day!

5. Clean Your House

Cleaning your house is definitely exercise if you get the vacuum out and have pushed it around the house you've undoubtedly broken a sweat if you're cleaning thoroughly enough. All those pushing motions and moving furniture to get in and about everything is a great workout.

Then you've got all the other great motions of cleaning, toe touches while you're hanging up the washing, Mr. Miyagi's wax on wax off motions while dusting. It's just great and adding in the workout elements makes it just that little bit more fun too.
