Hot But Not Healthy - Body Damage Through Exercise

I have fallen in love. With a very hot, half-naked, sword-wielding gladiator off the telly. Claire, her Husband and I have spent the last few weeks working our way through all the episodes from the SKY programme Spartacus. It's meant to be a historical representation of the Roman Empire, but it's actually a brilliant excuse for a lot of sex, violence and beautiful, slow motion camera work. We love it.

I have my favourite gladiator - Gannicus. And Claire has hers. Spartacus. But not the one in the latest series. Her favourite is played by the actor Andy Whitfield from the first series. Strikingly beautiful, deep voiced, brooding looks, incredibly fit. What is so shocking about watching this wonderful actor is that he died of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in September last year, aged 39.

In the show Spartacus, played by Andy, is the strongest gladiator in the arena. A god of a man with rippling muscles, oily bronzed skin who is partial to giving epic speeches about freedom. It is so hard to believe that a man who runs around the screen like a spring chicken has cancer. Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma is cancer of the lymphoid tissue, it affects people, men more than women, who have weakened immune systems. To look at Andy Whitfield you cannot see a single blemish on him, let alone a weakened immune system!

So how? How can a man, obviously at the peak of physical fitness be struck down with cancer? There could be a number of reasons. I don't know his family history. But a theory I believe contributed to his illness is the physical stress he put his body under.

Fitness and health are two very different things. It is possible to have an unfit person who is healthy. It is also possible to have a very fit person who is unhealthy. In our clinic we see a number of athletes and sports professionals at the peak of their game but suffer with health complaints, injuries and problems. We are able to calculate our clients true biological age through a measure called Turn Back Time. One of the most interesting results we have had is with two Personal Trainers in their 30s who, despite being incredibly fit, came out 10 years older in their biological tests.

Think of our bodies like engines. When we exercise we require more oxygen, more fuel, more vitamins, more minerals, more protein, more everything. Yes exercise is fantastic for the body but if we don't have what we need our bodies suffer with free radical damage. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that clump together with other molecules and cause disease, illness and sometimes cancer.

Anyone putting their body under a lot of physical stress needs antioxidants. Antioxidants stop free radical molecules from becoming unstable. Antioxidants are found in fruit and vegetables such as green leafy veggies and dark coloured fruits and also in supplement drinks, our favourite being Zambroza thanks to its ridiculously high antioxidant level.

The lesson here is if you're hot and fit you are not necessarily healthy. Anyone putting their body under physical strain - body builders, marathon runners, triathletes and gym goers need to support themselves, in fact we all do. Even a mighty Gladiator needs his daily fruit, vegetables, good quality protein and high antioxidant intake to stay well.

Natural bodybuilders, marathon runners, triatheltes, usually have a balanced diet. Nutrition ranks number one on a serious bodybuilder's list. Their diet contains vast amount of protein it's true, but also large quantities of vegetables, complex carbohydrates and a myriad of supplements to help their body recover and grow.
There are genetic disposition to developing certain illnesses, no matter how fit you are, a heart condition leading to serious complication or even death may not be avoided by simply exercising or staying healthy. It's jumping to conclusion to say that Andy Whitfield's level of training may have contributed to his disease. We can also rule out the use of anabolic steroids in his case, his body was good but he had the typical frame of a natural weight trainer.
The target audience to preach to regarding healthy diet and the use of supplements should be the "general" population, who eat too much, drink and smoke.
Strength and endurance athletes do many things right and only in extreme cases, like bodybuilders on steroids and cyclists on EPO for instance would there be a case to investigate the correlation between their lifestyle and disease. Or Ironman athletes who push their bodies to the edge, training at high volume on a weekly basis.
In my opinion, exercise is the best medicine for a lot of ailments. People who exercise hard tend to support it with sound nutrition and supplementation to enhance their performance and/or appearance.

Thank you Jean Marc for your reply and I agree, exercise is fantastic for the body.
I have mixed experience of athletes and body builders, some look after and support their bodies with diet and supplementation. Others do not. I do not know Andy Whitfield's background and whether he supported his body but I wanted to raise this debate. I'm interested in your opinion, do you believe that a person can have too much exercise?

I guess everything in excess can have a negative effect on the body. A lot of people do not support their bodies with diet&supplementation AND do not exercise, that's possibly the worst case scenario! The question raised by your article is "can someone over exercise to the point of causing cancer or other disease (because of free radicals/oxidative stress for instance)". I don't think so, not that my individual opinion matters, we would need to look for studies. My position on these kind of matters is "show me the controlled studies". It also raises another question : "does it really matter?". If over exercising caused cancer, how many people does it really affect compared to the smokers/obese/drinkers? We know the scores for these categories, we don't need any more studies!
I guess the more obvious negative side of over-training can be found in elite athletes with a myriad of ailments. Big subject. Good luck, :)

I find this article so incredibly awful and inappropriate. Andy Whitfield passed away less than one year ago and yet you are qualifying his life choices with your "opinions" and assumptions. You as well as most of the rest of the world know nothing of his choices, his life style, his eating habits and yet you tarnish his name with conjecture (so please spare us the positive spin that you are a fan) . Your hubris is unacceptable. If you are going to encourage people to live healthier lifestyles you might want to start with encouraging cutting out alcohol, or drugs, or eating healthier. Hell, maybe they should even stop smoking....but I do believe that exercise should not be topping your list. Stupid article.

Hi Michael, thank you for your comment. You are right in the respect I do not know his lifestyles choices and eating habits and I reference this in the post. I wanted to raise the debate about the pressure athletes and body builders put on their body and whether this can contribute to illness. Exercise is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, I simply wanted to raise the question can too much exercise be damaging.
