Yet More Catholic Anti-Gay Bashing

Posted: 27/07/2012 09:41

And so, the anti-gay rants emanating from the Catholic quarters begin again. In his wisdom the new Bishop of Glasgow Philip Tartaglia has decided to suggest that the premature death of gay Labour MP David Cairns could be related to his sexual orientation. As a good colleague of mine would say, Oh Dear!

Politically incorrect as they may be, I have to admit that while some in the press have gone into overdrive after coming across Bishop Tartaglia's comments, they have not surprised me a tiny bit.

Bishop Tartaglia represents, after all, an institution that until 20 years ago had failed to apologise for its active participation for centuries in the enslaving and exploitation of people across the world. During those centuries, the Catholic Church not only condoned but also participated in the trafficking of human beings, owned quite a few of them, exploited their work as they saw fit, and punished them when they failed to fulfill their tasks.

I say I am not surprised because while the Catholic Church was okay with the traffic of human beings and the exploitation of their work to produce profits, it was never okay with the possibility that people of the same sex could fall in love or have intimate relationships with one another. In simple words, these holy men believed that to their God slavery and human trafficking were acceptable, while homosexuality was a terrible sin.

And of course, they had their excuses to get away with this set of questionable moral values. To start with, to them gay people were mentally and/or physically ill, or worse, they could also be possessed by demons and the like.

Even today you wouldn't struggle to find Catholic priests -and for what is worth protestant ministers too- who in their self-righteous and ignorant perspective of the world, continue to practice exorcisms on gay men and women with the clear intention of "healing" them by expelling these demons out of their bodies. No need to tell here that they can do so because their churches actively believe and preach that homosexuality is a disorder, contrary to natural law and sinful.

I do, however, have to admit that in the midst of this ethereal and deranged view of the world, they have progressed a little bit over the past 200 years. At least now, those deemed to be "ill" or "possessed" are not tortured by faith tribunals and condemned to die on the stake for showing such ungodly behaviours.

Although these improvements are obvious for all to see, we should not be tricked into thinking that this evolution was a willing one. If anything the leaders of Catholic Church resisted practically every humanistic development for the past 200 years, including some coming from within its own ranks. Since the Enlightenment came along in the eighteenth century they have been fighting a losing battle against the forces of progress, science and secularisation.

Bishop Tartaglia's remarks, as those recently made by Cardinal O'Brian comparing same-sex marriage with slavery, are a timely reminder of why it is necessary to continue to build a secularised world where bigot and sexist discriminatory positions as theirs are vanished for good.

Tartaglia, O'Brian, and their pawns should probably concentrate on their own religious matters, and stop trying to force their obsolete, distorted and ill-informed conceptions of the world upon society. More importantly, they should to start showing some respect and some down-to-earth Christian love (as that radiating from the teachings of Jesus Christ) for those whose sexual orientation fails to match their own expectations.

Please can someone explain how a " marriage ceremony " of two people of the same sex would be worded ?.. Would the person conducting the ceremony say " I now pronounce you Man and Husband / Woman and Wife " ??
Doesnt have the same ring does it !!!!
The homosexual community dont want anything to be soley for hetrosexuals, even though they know they are not equal in many things.
It is not a case of homosexuals gaining equal rights , it is a case of hetrosexuals losing something that is soely for them.

Please can someone explain to me what the actual " marriage " of two people would be like ?.. How will they decide who takes who name ?.. Will the person conducting the ceremony say " I now pronounce you man and husband, or I now pronounce you woman and wife " ?... It doesnt have the same ring does it !!!!
The homosexual community must realise they are not equal in certain things so why as for equality when they know they are not equal. It is like a man demanding to wear a tampon for 2 days every month just because women do... it makes the homosexual community sound very immature and stupid.
Also with transgenders why do they feel they need their body changing to match their mind ??... why not change their mind to match their body ??

A Personal Observation: My Father is Cathoilc and my Mother is Lutheran. I was raised as a Lutheran My father sexual abused me, my sisters and my brother. My Lutheran religion "Called Out" this abuse and through Lutheran Social Services, had my Father removed from our home. The Catholic Church slammed my mother for this..breaking up a traditional home, the Priest said.

This is a joke I picked, it is not mine and it refers to a real story, but I don't know who. It talks about the drunk gay man who attended mass. When he saw the bishop coming in with the incense thingy, he said to him: "honey, your dress is divine, but your purse is on fire". The moral of the story is: even when faced with the adversity of having the catholic church spewing hate against us, we still manage to retain our dignity and sense of humor. I wonder if the church knows of any of those two things

Just be thankful they aren't able to burn gay people at the stake any more.

I think what really bugs me is the bloody arrogance. I do not dispute the Catholic Church's ability to speak for its members. However there are churches and religions which do not condemn homosexuality and will gladly marry smae sex couples. Where are their rights?

The first time church / minsiter / religious leader opens his mouth and mentions any political issue, they should lose thier tax exemption. and should have to pay back taxes starting from the present day back to the first day they opened thier doors.

Ah,the Bible and particularly the OT and people are using it as a defence??!?!?

I shall now invoke Godwin's Law and say that people may as well quote Hitler as a defence ;)

Would all forward-thinking Catholics PLEASE stop giving money to the Church?

@666- I guess you haven't heard yet that we live by the laws of the Constitution and shockingly for you, not by the laws bible. All of us live with the three unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Of which none of those rights are qualified with "the way any one particular religion" describes what those terms mean as the "standard". The LGBTQ folks have been designated as a class of people who warrant the same rules of equality and justice as everyone else. For folks like you who have a 3,000 year old perspective on life, this must really irk you, so you go ahead and condemn the gay community with your religious dogma thinking that you can sit in Gods' place. For folks like you, who think this is right thing to do in attacking the LGBTQ people, that attitude is best described as a "I'm not happy 'till you're not happy" syndrome. The perfect picture of a nosy busybody who isn't totally happy with their own life, and who wants to make sure others who don't live according to your moral code are getting the biggest dose of unhappiness as can be possibly achieved. And you think God is going to reward you for this? I think you'll be shocked when you see them enter the kingdom before you, Pharisee.

Here in America, the Catholic bishops have exhausted their credibility on any subjects because they are pederasts and pederast protectors. Any "moral" stance about other people's sexuality, women's reproductive rights, and (!!!) the Girl Scouts is just a cynical ploy on the part of the bishops to re-direct the conversation and get the spotlight off their real sins.

here are some key bible verses on homosexuality.........1 Corinthians 6:9-10 - "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." (NIV).

Leviticus 18:22 - "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable." (NIV)

Leviticus 20:13 - "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads....

Romans 1:26-27 - "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion." (NIV)

Yes, the Bible is truly full of wisdom;

3. Genesis 15:9
The Lord answered, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a she-goat, three years old, a ram three years old, a turtle dove and a young pigeon.”

12. Deut. 25:11
When two men are fighting and the wife of one of them intervenes to drag her husband clear of his opponent, if she puts out her hand and catches hold of the man by his privates, you must cut off her hand and show her no mercy.

11. Genesis 19:8
“Look, I have two daughters, virgins both of them. Let me bring them out to you and you could do what you like with them. But do nothing to these men because they have come under the shelter of my roof.”

4. Deut. 23:1
No man whose testicles have been crushed or whose organ has been cut off may become a member of the Assembly of God.

I don't have enough space to correct all of these and explain why they are simply modern mistranslations. However, consider for a second the quote from Romans. If the individuals in question were gay they would not have "abandoned natural relations with women" to engage in acts with other men. Gay men would not have engaged in relations with women in the first place. Thus, the improper part here is that they abandoned their natural attractions to women. Along the same line it would be just as improper and un-natural for gay men to abandon their natural attractions to men in order to engage in relations with women.

As for the quote from Corinthians, I direct you to this explanation of the original meaning.

Even though Leviticus doesn't apply generally to Christians I direct you to a similar example of the original meaning.

Excellent response - without condemning anyone to Hell.

We should marvel at the multiplicity of ways in which nature achieves the continuance of the human species.
