Would You Pay to Post on Your Facebook Wall?

Posted: 22/05/2012 01:00

All eyes on Friday were on the Facebook IPO with analysts and investors still undecided about whether it makes sense to value a company with revenue of under $4bn at $104bn.

And one of the key questions is how Facebook will increase the amount of revenue they earn from advertising and other services. Which leads me to a little experiment they have been undertaking recently in New Zealand.

First, it's worth explaining that your Facebook news feed does not show you every single update or post that your friends make. It uses some clever algorithms to just show you the posts you might be most interested in seeing. You can choose to follow every single thing some friends are posting by making them 'close friends' but everyone I know who has tried that has found they are suddenly flooded with too many updates to read.

The experiment Facebook has been testing on Kiwis is to see if users would be prepared to pay a cash amount to ensure their status update is promoted - like a featured post that is certain to go to everyone in your network.

Many users involved in the experiment in New Zealand thought that it must be a scam when Facebook asked users if they wanted to make a cash contribution for posting on their own wall, but the company has confirmed that it is a genuine experiment.

Of course for most individuals it is not all that important for wall posts to be promoted, but your news feed is probably a mixture of updates from friends as well as updates from brands you have 'liked' in the past.

Many of those brands would love to ensure that their updates get widely distributed to all their fans - not just the ones that the update algorithm decides should see the update.

It's an interesting experiment, but if every brand started paying to force their updates up your newsfeed then won't we need to scroll down through pages of corporate updates before ever seeing what our real friends are up to?

This is one idea that might need to return to the drawing board, but with so much new cash flowing into the company post-IPO I guess they have a little time to figure out the future of advertising.

Facebook lets me know what my 300 friends are gonna eat for their next meal and to me, that is priceless.

FB will be just another ad revenue supported web property. As they search for more revenue they will drive down the CPM that advertisers will pay, hurting everyone in that space.

The first person on my friends list who pays to have their post ''prioritised'' will be the first of my friends to go.

There is nothing on Facebook worth paying for, and I don't think I have anythin so important, pressing or mind-blowing I need to pay to make a wall post.
If they start charging I would rather save me money and meet someone in person for coffee or somthing, or give them a phone call.

Agreed, at the moment Facebook is a luxury. It is not critical to anyone online because there are other network community platforms available that will remain free for the foreseeable future.

Hey maybe I would pay to NOT get the notifications from my facebook 'so-called' friends.

You know you can just stop going to facebook right? That way you don't have to pay anything.

Pay to have your information sold to marketers and crooks?

I deactivated and deleted all my facebook info. If you don't you are just asking for ID theft.

The day that facebook charges me even a penny is the day I quit the service. I've already discovered that it doesn't have much value in my life. I now only keep it up to maintain contact with what I call secondary friends....those people I have liked but that don't really have contact with in my day to day life. Family and real friends are connected personally. We don't need facebook to remain close to people who are key in our lives.

I can't imagine anything that I would be willing to pay to have posted. If it is that important an event, pick up the phone.

I think many people here are missing the point. Facebook would still be free. However let's say I had something coming up I wanted everyone to know about. Not necessarily a fixed event but something that you would want everyone to know (I just had a baby). You could p[ay asmall fee and it would make all of your friends posts. That way you would know everyone saw it instead of just the ones that was in your algorithm. I like the idea actually. You can pay if you want or not.

Sorry, but I think you've missed the point. There are free online alternatives available. No need to waste money when it's so unnecessary.

I would not pay for anything if Facebook charges for. I could get it somewhere else for free so it would not be worth it.

If I used the dying fad call Facebook there's no way I would pay for anything on their site. There's too many other free sites that do the same thing.

There is NOTHING Facebook has to offer with it's snotty officious "Customer Service" or snoopy little way of selling me to the world to EVER warrant paying them for a wall. If they want to add services like better movies than Netflix or better TV than Hulu, we might talk-but I don't see it happening. The day I get a bill for Facebook, I'll become part of a mass exodus that'll make the Red Sea split.
