Mike is a freelance wine writer/blogger www.magicsnewbiewines.com and former independent wine retailer. Having begun his wine career back in 1995, with the now defunct First Quench Retailing, he married up his role within FQR as a Wine Rack store manager around west London and company wine tutor.

After the demise of FQR Mike, along with business owners Marco & Harriet Napolitano, set up an independent wine store, North & South Wines LTD, Battersea, London. In August 2010 the business opened up to a very grateful wine drinking population of SW11 London.

April 2011 saw Mike begin his wine blog, Magics Wine Guide and Reviews for Newbies, under his online alter ego Magic Mike. The blog was originally set up as an educational portal for new wine drinkers. Subscribers can visit the site and learn about wine, grape varieties, tasting techniques without all the traditional pretence. Since those early days it has developed into an online wine magazine, offering news from trade journals around the world, reviews, interviews, Mike’s own thoughts and writing.

Mike's commercial work can occasionally be seen in Harpers Wine & Spirit Trades Review, as well as blog posts on the magazines website.

California has been a hotbed of great wine for many years now, even if somewhat misunderstood. The massed produced styles of Gallo's Rosé have dominated supermarkets and High St outlets for a long time now, thus giving a poor representation to the true nature of this States wonderful wine.

In order to be successful in business you need 'the idea'. You need to find something that no one else has thought of, perhaps rework an existing model. It's not easy! So when do you achieve that Archimedes moment when you stand up and scream 'eureka, I've got it?' Last...

Treachery, murder, piracy! Sounds like a great plot for a Hollywood blockbuster. For the de Marisco family, this was all in a days work. It wasn't always that boring. At one time or another the family actually held high roles within the English court....

Wine - When Wine and Music Collide

(0) Comments | Posted 13 October 2012 | (16:32)

Did you know music has an effect on how we taste wine? Neither did I at first but once the question was posed, it did get me thinking. Wine has the ability to evoke many memories and emotions. Your favourite day could be associated to a particular wine you've had,...

Wine Review: Zebra View Pinotage 2011

As grape varieties go Pinotage seems to have developed a bit of a Marmite tag, you either love it or hate it. I've never been able to work out why! Maybe it's a lack of understanding; after all, genealogically speaking, it's still a relatively new genus.
