Remembering Amy

Posted: 23/07/2012 00:00

I've always loved music; it's always been an enormous part of my life. Listening to music makes me happy and, when I'm not, it helps to cheer me up. My mother passed her love of music on to me and I passed it on to Amy. It formed a big part of my relationship with Amy and was as important to her as it was to me. Amy always surrounded herself with music, even during her darkest times.

I thought a lot about Amy's relationship with music, her own and the music of other artists, while I was writing my book. Of course, I loved her voice - for me she was the greatest female vocalist of all time - but I also cherish Amy's lyrics, and the part other music played in her life as she was growing up.

When she was a teenager Amy sang with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra for a while. It was with them that she made one of her first real recordings. They put together a CD and, when she popped round one day, Amy gave me a copy. I listened to it after she left. When I got to Amy's recording of the old Hoagy Carmichael/Ned Washington standard The Nearness of You, I got a shiver down my spine. It was the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard.

Suddenly the world was a better place, suddenly everything was right and I felt a sense of inner peace. More than a hundred artists have recorded The Nearness of You - from Sarah Vaughan to Frank Sinatra to Judy Garland, even the Rolling Stones had a bash at it (and it wasn't half bad) - but none of them, not one of them, is a patch on my Amy's version. I still it play often. It was, and will always be, just beautiful.

In writing my book I also had to put into words my thoughts on the songs that Amy wrote. To put it simply, I think they are wonderful. All of her lyrics were so well-observed, so pertinent, so clever. Frank was always my favourite album of Amy's. To me, tracks like You Sent Me Flying and Stronger than Me instantly conjure up the innocence of young love. The lyrics of Fuck Me Pumps are brilliantly funny and never fail to make me smile.

But I have always found it hard to listen to the songs Amy wrote for Black to Black. That's because all of the songs on that album, apart from Rehab, are about her ex-husband Blake, and all of the terrible things he put her through.

And what did Amy think about the songs she wrote? Well, Amy was always very critical of her own music. But it was more than that with the tracks on Back to Black - some of them she hated, because they reminded her of all of the bad times with Blake. Towards the end they became very difficult for her to sing.

She was most proud of Stronger than Me, You Know I'm No Good and Rehab because of the Ivor Novello Awards she won for them. Amy wasn't big on awards generally, but the Ivors were different. The Ivor Novello Awards are judged and presented by the writing community for outstanding songwriting and composing, not for singing well or selling millions of albums. As Amy told me many a time: "The Ivors are awarded by people who know what's what about songs and stuff." They meant the world to Amy.

Sometimes listening to Amy's music helps me; sometimes it makes me feel more sad. I miss Amy more than I can say. When I've finished writing this I'm going to sit down with a cup of tea and listen to Amy's recording of The Nearness of You.

I have heard her "sing" and I cannot for the life of me, understand why so many people liked her. She was no Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion, Ann Murry to name a few. These women had talent, not the meewlings of modern female singers.

It was bittersweet to see Amy's face flash on the giant screens during the Olympic Opening Ceremony....

Mr. Winehouse,

First off, I am so, so sorry for your loss. I thought your daughter was a beautiful, strong spirit, really smart and incredibly talented. :) It was clear how much she loved you and it is very clear to me how much you loved her. Parents who love their child have a way of holding on to the experiences you collect which may be hurtful. But you know...Amy...was a passionate young lady and very young (in her 20s)...that time most of us make strong wrong choices. So Blake was going to be one of her bumps in the road. I don't want to go on about addiction but I wanted to say, Amy was giving it a reaaaal go (at kicking hers). But that road is difficult. The reason I'm saying all this, is b/c one day you should forgive and release the Blake phase, it was part of the strong wrong. All of her life is yours for the loving and working through, I just don't want you to snag on him because Amy brought alot of good through her music, and I'm sure in her personal contributions. So one day, love her tumbles too. It was part of her growing into a woman. Unfortunately some of us burn the road up en route, but she was really growing beyond that. It was a full life sir, unfinshed, but full. Much respect to you sir.

I liked her voice and thought she had an interesting career ahead of her. Unfortunately things worked out differently.

Her music should never be played again.
Tv presenters, politicians, athletes, Footballers, rugby players, policemen and anybody and anyone that may be considered to be a role model in today's society. They are sacked, banned, suspended, prosecuted and publicly embarrassed into apologising for their drug taking. So called pop stars have their records played daily and are held in some respectful reverence. "they are artists".
She was a drug addict/user and I for one do not want my children to be guided by others into thinking that Amy is to be celebrated.

Have you ever buried a child you gave birth to? If you think that’s a harsh question to be asked by a total stranger then you should refer back to your own message. Your message cuts very deep. I hope Mr. Winehouse doesn't read your message, but I would imagine that after burying his only daughter he is pretty much numb to anything else moving forward. I was never a fan of Amy Winehouse's music, but her talent was piercing. People don't celebrate that she fell victim to drugs; but rather her talent, her voice and most of all her tragically short life. Her music is all her father, the rest of her family and the countless fans have left. Beautiful recordings of her voice... that’s all that’s left and you think it should never be played again.... I don't know mtclyde, sounds pretty cold to me- have a heart man!!!

REALLY ? And you dont think that you are going a little bit over the top there ? I mean she has paid the price for her addiction. Well her family also, but i think your comment is a little over the top.

Speaking of success...her musical talent earned her 23 awards from 60 nominations! Including SIX Grammy Awards (including five wins). And, in February 2012, Winehouse was listed at number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Women In Music. Her deep contralto vocals were second to none. Quite an accomplishment! Love your fan from the 60's.

Boy you 30+ Gen Xers are really looking for a hero. Michael Jackson, Kurt Cobain, or Amy Winehouse. Jackson was a pedophile. Remember when he paid that boy $10 million dollars to keep quiet? Or as a 40 year old man, having sleep-overs with pre-teen children. Kurt Cobain had 7 songs with Nirvana and the highest one reached #6, wooo! And now Amy Winehouse, other than 'Rehab', she had NOTHING. Most concert appearances were a joke. When she wasn't stoned, she forgot her words and slurred her speech. And you fans thought she was some kind of an English Bard. Phu-leez! Amy Winehouse was a drunken sot, who perhaps had musical talent. But died before she ever reached any kind of potential. Too Bad.

Why the hate? Clearly you know very little of her or her music or her impact on other people. Phu-leez...grow up.

What hate? I know she squandered her talent and her life. You remind me of the hippies who still worship Hendrix, Morrison, and Joplin. Lives ended too soon. Or is that hate?

Her version of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" is my most favorite...it just takes me somewhere.
I would love to her her version of "The Nearness of You.
