From May 5th, Animals Asia will convert a bear bile farm in Nanning, China, into a sanctuary following a request by the farm to rescue and care for its 130 bears. Mr Yan Shaohong, General Manager of the bear farm, has described the decision as one fuelled by the desire for the company to get out of the increasingly unpopular and ultimately unprofitable industry.
The benefits for animals are very significant - anyone who is aware of the infamous Draize Eye test that forces shampoo into rabbits' eyes over several days will appreciate that change was overdue, especially as the non-animal alternative tests often have a better predictive value for actual human reactions.
In this age of school stabbings and increased violence, we mustn't tolerate cruelty of any kind. Mowgli's suffering can't be erased, but we can prevent more individuals from becoming victims by treating cruelty to animals with the gravitas it deserves and by making training in compassion an integral part of every child's education.
