Topless Ukrainian feminists, Femen were taken off a roof by firemen hundreds of feet above a far right demonstration in central Paris this afternoon. Four women, including the groups leader, Inna Shevchenko occupied a balcony above a crowd of hundreds of members of extreme right wing groups to protest against neo-Nazism.
The older I get, the more I believe that 'equality' is nothing more than a smokescreen to prevent the true liberation of women. Equality before the law means nothing when violence is endemic; when women are most likely to live in poverty; when no one bothers to actually enforce the existing equality legislation.
While a large proportion of women in Islam-dominated regions of the world are indeed restricted and even oppressed, their issues are indicative of a larger cultural paradigm that is masked under the veil of Islam. They are not caused by the religion itself, rather by biased patriarchal interpretations.
If Femen really want to help Muslim women they should address the fact that for far too long now, Muslim women have been marginalised, bombed, raped, killed, and enslaved by men from the western world. They should work within their own countries to try and subvert future wars against Muslim countries and help break down barriers. Or perhaps they should stick to trying to liberate women in the west.
I have written about my concerns with Femen's brand of feminism before as I believe their message is obscured by the medium of their protest, which conforms to the normalised construction of the Patriarchal Fuckability Test. Feminism cannot succeed using the same old patriarchal discourse which oppresses us. Baring breasts is a normal occurrence in our pornified culture.
The fate of the Femen Tunisia activist Amina Tyler has shaken up and united thousands of women across the globe. Amina's act of civil disobedience has brought down upon her the lethal hatred of inhuman beasts, for whom killing a woman is more natural than recognising her right to do as she pleases with her own body.
