On 18 September police officers Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23 were killed after they attended reports of a burglary in Abbey Gardens, Manchester. The Greater Manchester Police officers are believed to have been murdered in cold blood by fugitive Dale Cregan. Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy said Dale Cregan is thought to have made a bogus burglary report then attacked the officers, opening fire with a gun and a grenade.
