If Elected Leader, I Would Put Labour Values At The Heart Of Scotland's Future

Anas Sarwar | Posted 08.09.2017 | UK Politics
Anas Sarwar

I want us to focus on creating a country that fights inequality and fights injustice wherever we see it. That is only possible with a Labour government in Holyrood. And that is why I am standing to be the next Scottish Labour leader and our party's nominee for the next First Minister of Scotland.

The Tories' Massive DUP Deal Proves Austerity Is A Political Choice

While Theresa May limps on, her deal throws up an immediate question: will all parts of the UK also receive similar vital additional funding, as Northern Ireland is getting as part of the deal? For me, this is crucial. This massive cash deal with the DUP proves that austerity is a political choice made by the Tories, and when push comes to shove, money can be found. So it is vital that Scotland, Wales and the regions of England also get extra funding to end austerity.

Only Labour Has The Ideas And The Will To Unlock The Potential Of The Scottish Parliament

Closing the gap between the richest and the rest will be better for our whole economy. More working class people having more money in their pockets will stimulate our economy from the ground up. That's why under my leadership, Scottish Labour has relentlessly pursued an agenda to use the powers of the Scottish Parliament to invest in our economy, not carry on the cuts.

Devolution And PR: The Antidote To Brexit Poison?

Simon Sapper | Posted 12.12.2016 | UK Politics

With the current UK government elected by less than 25% of the electorate, with the centre left arguably firmly shut out of politics, and with the scope to establish the most effective voice at Westminster somewhat stymied by SNP-reduced Parliamentary airspace, this could be a perfect storm set to break over the next couple of years.

Labour, If There Was Ever a Time for New Leadership, It's Now

Imogen Wilson | Posted 29.06.2017 | UK Politics
Imogen Wilson

Like many of the 74% of under 25s who voted remain, I'm craving the best things about politics: to be inspired and reassured that things will get better. Under the current leadership I have little hope of finding those things in Labour, so it is vital that the MPs see the vote of no-confidence as an opportunity for the party to find its feet again, a real alternative to a government run without their electorate's best interests at heart.

Taxes Aren't Optional for the Rest of Us - They Shouldn't be Optional for the Richest

Different rules seem to apply to the richest 1% compared to the rest of us. The revelations from the Panama papers are rocking political parties around the world. Making sure that the top 1% pay their fair share like the rest of us has become a key issue in this election.

Order an Inquiry Today, Prime Minister

The Tory government pays these companies millions of pounds to provide accommodation to recently arrived refugees. This is public money and the companies receiving it must be held to account for the way they treat people in need in our name. If they do not do that, then they should not retain these lucrative contracts. These are extremely serious allegations and the Prime Minister should stop prevaricating- he should order an independent investigation today.

Louise Wilson | Posted 06.02.2017 | UK Politics

Scottish Labour will seriously lose out in this election, of that there is little doubt. Amid speculation that the Conservatives may even beat them to the punch as the SNPs main part of opposition, Labour released its regional list rankings. How will the makeup of the parliamentary party have changed after May?

Between Using the Powers of the Scottish Parliament and Making Cuts to Our Children's Future, We Must Choose to Use Our Powers

Kezia Dugdale | Posted 02.02.2017 | UK Politics

The whole point of devolution was about being able to do things differently. In Scotland we don't have to accept Tory austerity - we can reject it, protect education and build a fairer and more prosperous Scotland. The Scottish budget gets its first reading in the Scottish Parliament tomorrow. Today I'm setting out a different plan.

People My Age Have Had Their Aspirations Crushed by Austerity - It's Time to Change That

Everyone deserves a home and a chance, but too many people my age in Scotland are either living at home with their parents or stuck in expensive rents unable to get that first foot on the property ladder. Home ownership is a big ambition for hundreds of thousands of Scots, but for too many people my age it remains an ambition rather than a reality.

Labour Can Look Forward to Moving Forward in 2016

My constituents and Britain as a whole needs a Labour Party that together takes the opposition to the Tories and deliver a Labour government the country so desperately needs; an equal and fair society with housing for all, a world class national health system, plus well-paid and high-skilled jobs. Let's make it happen.

Today's Debate on Tax Credits Is a Defining Moment for Holyrood

Kezia Dugdale | Posted 03.11.2016 | UK Politics
Kezia Dugdale

Labour will always put those on lower and middle incomes first. That's why we will restore the tax credits that families in Scotland lose, once the powers to do so are devolved... If the SNP do not vote for this motion to restore the money lost from tax credits it will confirm once and for all that the politics of grievance is more important to them than helping working families in Scotland.
