Sadly, both Fuck0ffee and Bricklane Coffee, appear to have misunderstood the time-old saying that "any publicity is good publicity" and, in doing so, to have missed a very simple truth: If you want to stand out in London's over-saturated independent coffee market, insulting 52% of the population isn't the best way to go about it. It's bad marketing, bad PR and, worst of all? It's not even funny.
We've all heard the "if you haven't got something nice to say, don't say it" spiel. But freedom of speech is an important human entitlement and Hopkins is right to voice her thoughts. However awful, at least they give conscientious people the opportunity to undermine her with compassionate, reasoned stances.
Whether we pay them by the mouse-click, pay them by the purchase of a newspaper or pay them by the phone votes on a TV talent show, we pay them nonetheless. Whether they're providing us with loathsome viewpoints, shouting at unknown singing hopefuls or just misrepresenting evidence in order to demonise a section of the population, paid assholes seem to be everywhere.
Sure the bird-flip was pretty ill-judged - but when you book a provocative performer like M.I.A what did they expect? Given the utter degeneration and hyper-sexualisation of our current crop of female pop performers, in terms of debasing, offensive, inappropriate performances, M.I.A.'s middle-finger salute was little more than a cheeky nose-thumbing.
