Cinemas are reopening across Britain, but has lockdown caused irreparable damage to an industry already threatened by the rise of streaming platforms?

This decade has seen huge leaps in the world of technology. From iPads and streaming services such as Netflix making their way into our homes, the way we entertain ourselves has changed completely. The past ten years have also welcomed AI assistants and advancements in virtual reality, transforming our relationship with technology forever.
Streaming service Netflix said it would pull its productions out of Georgia if controversial bill HB 481 is successfully implemented in 2020. The so-called Heartbeat Bill would make abortions illegal after the detection of a foetal heartbeat. Popular Netflix show “Stranger Things”, among others, is filmed in Georgia.
Having recently announced that they have taken full control of streaming service Hulu, The Walt Disney Company continues to dominate the entertainment industry. As well as its own famous studios, Disney also owns Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox, so it’s hardly surprising that the media powerhouse amassed almost $60 billion in global revenue last year.
The BBC and ITV have announced plans to launch their own streaming service, Britbox. Britbox will launch later this year with a collection of boxsets and originals, expected to rival the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime.
